THE MORNING SERVICE WILL BE HELD IN PERSON
AT ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30AM

Welcome

This weekend the clocks go back, the darkness now starts creeping in. There is also a turn in the church calendar, All Saints to Christ the King, we now enter Kingdom Season and the season of Remembrance. So we begin by remembering the Saints, all those people of faith who gave their life to Jesus and were determined to make a difference in the world. Yes, we are all saints and we are also all sinners. We have failed in so many ways: failed to care for God’s creation, our planet; failed to care for our neighbour, failed to care for ourselves. All of life is light and dark, good and evil, you and me, them and us, past, present and future. What difference did those saints make in their time? Can we learn from them? Does their story still speak to us today?

Our picture this week comes from our church school, Clewer Green. Each class has studied and reflected on a particular saint. My favourite, of course, is St Francis. So much of what St Francis did is still utterly relevant today, caring for all creatures great and small, for all creation, so that there is a future for all to enjoy. As COP26 begins its conference this weekend, NOW is the time to make a difference. It is all our duty to care for our planet so that when the children who are now at school, become grandparents, there is a sustainable planet for them to live and grow and flourish in.

When we have long gone, will our story of this time still be told, will our lives, our decisions make a difference in the future?

Blessings
Revd Rosie

Prayer for the COP26 climate summit (CAFOD)

Loving God, we praise your name with all you have created.   You are present in the whole universe, and in the smallest of creatures.  We acknowledge the responsibilities you have placed upon us as stewards of your creation.  May the Holy Spirit inspire all political leaders at COP26 as they seek to embrace the changes needed to foster a more sustainable society.  Instil in them the courage and gentleness to implement fairer solutions for the poorest and most vulnerable and commit their nations to the care of Our Common Home. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ your Son.
Amen

Collect – The Prayer of the day

Almighty God,
you have knit together your elect
in one communion and fellowship
in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord:
grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints
in all virtuous and godly living
that we may come to those inexpressible joys
that you have prepared for those who truly love you;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Readings

Isaiah 25.6-9

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples
   a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines,
   of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear.
And he will destroy on this mountain
   the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
   the sheet that is spread over all nations;
   he will swallow up death for ever.
Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces,
   and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,
   for the Lord has spoken.
It will be said on that day,
   Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
   This is the Lord for whom we have waited;
   let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Psalm 24.1-6

1  The earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it,
   the compass of the world and all who dwell therein.
2  For he has founded it upon the seas
   and set it firm upon the rivers of the deep.
3  ‘Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord,
   or who can rise up in his holy place?’
4  ‘Those who have clean hands and a pure heart,
   who have not lifted up their soul to an idol,
      nor sworn an oath to a lie;
5  ‘They shall receive a blessing from the Lord,
   a just reward from the God of their salvation.’
6  Such is the company of those who seek him,
   of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

Revelation 21.1-6a

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
‘See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.’

And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading

John 11.32-44

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John
Glory to you O Lord.

When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’ But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’

Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, ‘Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, ‘Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.’ When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you O Christ.

Prayers – Trevor Morgan

We lift our hearts to the Lord our God whose throne is in the heavens and who has shown us mercy in sending his only son to be born in great humility and poverty, to share our life, to experience our human joys and sorrows and to offer his life for us so that we too might through his abounding grace and mercy live with him for ever.  Eternal Father, our thanks can never be adequately expressed for all you have done for us, but give us grace to lead lives which are pleasing to you in all we undertake so that we may witness for you and lead others by precept and example to a saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Loving Lord. Father of us all, look down mercifully on all your children in any kind of need and  help us all to be more aware of those around us to whom we should minister. Especially today we uphold the suffering and starving people of Afghanistan and pray that the efforts being made to sustain and support them may be fruitful and successful.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Loving God, it is your will that all people should live together in peace and harmony, yet there are so many places in the world where there is unrest and suffering caused by conflict. We pray for a peaceful solution to the troubles the world over where people live in fear and in danger. We cannot begin to imagine the dreadful dangers to which they are exposed and we pray that you will instil in the hearts of world leaders a true desire for a just and lasting settlement that lives may be spared and peace may prevail. We pray for the peoples of Myanmar and Gaza that peaceful solutions may be brought about and for peace in all the places in the world where there is unrest and suffering.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father,  We pray for our communities of Dedworth and Clewer. We ask that all who turn to our churches in any kind of need may find willing listeners and help and understanding. We commend to your loving care all those who are unwell at this time or in hospital and we also remember especially all those who are unemployed, all who have financial concerns and all who are in any kind of difficulty. We pray most earnestly for all who do not regularly come to our churches that they may want to return and that when they do we will make them feel  welcome and wanted. Among those known to us, we pray for Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Alan, Norman and Diane, Patricia, and John. We also pray for Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Finally, Merciful Lord, we know that there will be some in our community whose lives have ended in recent days, including Donald Doe, Norman Brown, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time. We commend their souls to your eternal safekeeping and their loved ones to the compassion of the Lord Jesus.

Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer after communion

God, the source of all holiness and giver of all good things:
may we who have shared at this table
as strangers and pilgrims here on earth
be welcomed with all your saints
to the heavenly feast on the day of your kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Determined to be hopeful The COP26 Climate Conference with world leaders begins this weekend in Glasgow. Although the Chancellor’s speech yesterday failed to mention the climate crisis and delivered budget announcements that many feel are taking us in the wrong direction, we are determined to be hopeful.

Bishop Olivia spoke about the budget announcements and COP26 with Premier Christian Radio earlier today. Take a listen here. “The government is playing games with the sums on the aid budget… the money available is less than we think it is.”

“As Christians, we have a responsibility to speak out. These are spiritual issues. How much do we put ourselves at the centre of our concerns and not look out for

“I’m going to be a praying presence at COP26 and will be taking part in panel discussions. I hope that reasonableness and sensibleness breaks out… developing countries need our support to ensure a green path to their development.”

“God created the world and loved it and made it good. He gave us as human beings the responsibility for caring it. And we have a mandate to look out for our neighbours as ourselves. We need to put our money where our hearts are.”

Listen to the full interview with Bishop Olivia

Praying for COP26

Bishop Olivia is attending the conference and joining a range of events including speaking on a joint Faith Panel, which will be livestreamed here at 1:30pm on Monday.

We will be sharing daily prayer points and updates throughout the conference but here are some to get you started ahead of the weekend: Pray for the conference hosts, for wisdom, guidance, and ambition for UK negotiators and Alok Sharma, COP26 president. Pray for faith leaders attending the conference.

Pray for peaceful and fruitful discussions between world leaders. Pray for world leaders to make bold commitments to combat climate change. Pray for protection and support for developing nations most affected by climate change.

COP26 101 It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the news and to switch off. This brilliant infographic from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit explains why COP26 is important. It’s one of many resources on our website.

Be Vocal Former Prime Minister Theresa May and Bishop Steven have recorded films encouraging children and young people to write to their MPs about climate change during COP26.

Find out more and download resources for schools and Sunday groups here on the website.

A PRAYER VIGIL
FROM THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME

For the environment and our role in creating a sustainable and just future for all people on the earth

Call us out of our sleep;
Awaken our hearts and minds to the reality of so many lives.
Awaken us to our connectedness as a global community.
Awaken us to a future free from poverty and climate change.
Father, call us out of our sleep.

Call us out of our sleep;
Awaken us to the suffering of others.
Awaken our hearts and minds to our choices and their impacts.
Awaken us to be renewed with creation.
Awaken us to the joy of enabling others to live life to the full.
Christ, call us out of our sleep.

Call us out of our sleep;
Awaken our hearts and minds to your hope.
Awaken us to be renewed with creation.
Awaken us to the joy of enabling others to live life to the full.
Holy Spirit, call us out of our sleep.

A Prayer based on Psalm 102:5

‘In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands.’

Thank you for the gift of your creation.
As we travel through our lives may we take time to appreciate it, from each sunrise to sunset;
to celebrate the intricacies of your handiwork, admire the changing of the seasons,
recognising that this is a gift.

And may we care deeply that as our climate is changing, future generations may not have this luxury of enjoyment, that people around the world now are already suffering from climate change. May our actions reflect a love for your world and justice for those affected. Give us a prophetic imaginations for a world free from poverty and injustice. Amen.

A Prayer of Praise

Let us praise God!
With the roaring of the winds
And silence of the deepest sea;
With the blazing sun and the shining of the stars.

Let us praise God!

With all that is created, and all things beautiful and good; from desert plains to fruitful lands, with plants and creatures in all their kinds.

Let us praise God!

With one another today,
For love of all that God has made, in wonder at a world of beauty and reverence for a holy creation.

Let us praise God!

O God, our creator, who, in Jesus Christ,
Walked the earth, bless us with your Holy Spirit this day, that our worship and our walking, our prayers and our politics, may give you glory and honour creation.
Amen .

Creator of earth and of all earth’s children,
Creator of soil and sea and sky
And the tapestries of stars,
We turn to you for guidance
As we look on our mutilated planet, and pray that it is not too late for us to rescue our wounded world. We have been so careless. We have failed to nurture the fragile life you have entrusted to our keeping. We beg your forgiveness and we ask to begin again. Be with us Lord in our commitment to this earth. And let the whole earth say: Amen.

Miriam Therese Winter

May God bless us with wonder at creation’s glory.
May God bless us with fury at creation’s spoiling.
May God bless us with courage at this critical hour.
And may the blessing of God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,  rest upon us and on all creation,  this day and for the future to come. Amen.
