† St Andrews
Proclaiming Christ in Clewer
27 Feb 2022
Sunday next before Lent
THE EUCHARIST SERVICE WILL BE HELD IN PERSON AT ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30AM

Dear friends,

On this final Sunday before Lent begins, we rejoice that God’s glory is revealed in Jesus Christ. Through him we can have a closer relationship with our Father as the spirit frees us to approach God face to face.

Our first reading is from Exodus chapter 34 verses 29 to the end. As he has talked with God, while receiving the commandments, Moses’ face shines with the glory of such a close relationship. The rebellious Israelites find this intimidating, so Moses veils his face.

The second reading from the second letter to the Corinthians chapter 3 verse 12 to chapter 4 verse 2. Our relationship with Jesus makes us bold enough to see God’s unveiled glory without fear. In Jesus we are not condemned, but liberated. And the spirit strengthens us to reflect such glory to others.

In the gospel reading, from St Luke’s gospel chapter 9 verses 28-36, while Jesus prays, the disciples witness his glory. But sleepy Peter still thinks Moses and Elijah equal to Jesus. A cloud obscures the disciples’ understanding, but a voice identifies Jesus as God’s son, and urges them to listen to him.

Canon Brian

COLLECT

Almighty God,
from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed: kindle, we pray, in the hearts of all, the true love of peace and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
All Amen

READINGS

Exodus 34.29-end

Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterwards all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

This is the word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.

Psalm 99

The Lord is king: let the peoples tremble;
   he is enthroned above the cherubim: let the earth shake.
The Lord is great in Zion
   and high above all peoples.
Let them praise your name, which is great and awesome;
   the Lord our God is holy.
Mighty king, who loves justice,
      you have established equity;
   you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God;
   bow down before his footstool, for he is holy.
Moses and Aaron among his priests
      and Samuel among those who call upon his name;
   they called upon the Lord and he answered them.
He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud;
   they kept his testimonies and the law that he gave them.
You answered them, O Lord our God;
   you were a God who forgave them
      and pardoned them for their offences.
Exalt the Lord our God
      and worship him upon his holy hill,
   for the Lord our God is holy.

2 Corinthians 3.12-4.2

Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.

Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God.

This is the word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
All Glory to you, O Lord.

Luke 9.28-36

Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah’—not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!’ When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS – STUART COCKMAN

Let us pray, for the Church and for the world, and let us thank God for his goodness.

We pray that the Church, bearing your image before the world, may be changed from glory to glory towards the coming of your Kingdom … make your people worthy ministers of the riches of the Gospel.

And we pray for the Church, and all Bishops and Priests, throughout the world. We pray especially for our Archbishops Justin and Stephen. And in our area, we pray for our Bishops Stephen and Olivia; for Revd Rosie and Canon Brian. We pray for all decision makers in the Church.

In the Anglican cycle of prayer we pray for the Churches in Kenya, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

Grant to the world the sight of your glory … Come to those whose vision is veiled by material cares, and give them light.

We pray for all those who work for peace, negotiators, and world leaders.  We pray for the all the countries of the world in a state of war; we pray especially today for the people of Afghanistan. We also pray for peace in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Nigeria.

And we pray especially today for Ukraine, in the words of the prayer from our Archbishops, Justin and Stephen:

God of peace and justice,
we pray for the people of Ukraine today.
We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons.
We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow,
that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them.
We pray for those with power over war or peace,
for wisdom, discernment and compassion
to guide their decisions.
Above all, we pray for your precious children, at risk and in fear,
that you would hold and protect them.
We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
Amen.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

Give grace to us, our families, friends and neighbours, to find you in the daily events of life … Be present with us when we are alone and when we are within others.

And in our local community, we pray for everyone in Clewer, Dedworth, and in Windsor. We pray for our Church school, Clewer Green, the head teacher Martin Tinsley and all the pupils, staff and governors. For all our Care Homes, for the safety of residents and staff.

And in our Parish Cycle of Prayer, we pray for all who work at, or visit Legoland, Dedworth Medical Centre, Scouts, Cubs, Brownies, Guides, Thames Hospice, Guards Club, Tennis Club, and Windsor Gym.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

Have mercy on those who know you only imperfectly and do not serve you as they should … Pardon their blindness and give them the full light of salvation.

We pray for all in need, especially today: Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Norman and Diane, Patricia, and Frank. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn.

And we also pray for all who have asked for our prayers, those whose needs we know, and those known to God alone.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

We pray for those who have passed through the veil of death to behold your glory …  Grant them peace in the perfection of the blessed.

And with confidence in the love of Christ who died for sinners, we commend the souls recently departed this life, including Alan Griffiths, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time.

Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord,
and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

We join our prayers with those of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Andrew, St Agnes, and all the Saints, as we commend ourselves, one another, and those we have prayed for, to your unfailing love.

Merciful Father,
accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Holy God,
we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ:
may we who are partakers at his table
reflect his life in word and deed,
that all the world may know his power to change and save.
This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen
