† St Andrews Proclaiming Christ in Clewer 19 June 2022 The 1st Sunday after Trinity |
THE EUCHARIST SERVICE IS IN ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30 Welcome A time for change? Yes but! This week saw a trip to visit one of our church family members, who has moved to be near her family. A time for change, to move on from living on her own in a big house to a smaller, more manageable home, with more company and care. A time to let go and start afresh. Our Prayers and Bears group has come to a time for a change. The children have grown and will be off to school in September. Baptisms is our usual feeder into the group to welcome new families into church, but covid has meant opportunities to recruit have diminished. So how do we move forward with our families? What worked well for so long now has to be refreshed and re focussed, changed. Within the Church we are now entering Ordination season, Deacons and Priests will be ordained, bringing with it changes, new parishes, new homes, new schools etc. Letting go of the former things to take up a new way of life, to be the person God calls them out to be. Our readings this week call for a change, a call to follow. The gospel from Luke, is a difficult one. It’s confrontational and it doesn’t leave much, if any, wiggle room. “No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” We’re either looking toward the kingdom or we are not. We’re either responding to the call of life or we’re not. We’re either open to the coming future or we’re not. Elisha wanted to follow the call of Elijah, but first he had to deal with a few things. In Galatians we are tasked with letting go of certain behaviours and morals in order follow Jesus’ moral code of conduct. Jesus is calling us into question and that’s never easy, fun, or comfortable. He is calling into question the direction of our life, the values we claim to hold, and how we are living and embodying those values. But first…..I might not like that place, I might not like my neighbour, it’s too different. But first…. Yes, I will give to and care for another but first let me go and see why I should, what it will cost me, and what’s in it for me. Change isn’t necessarily good or bad, not necessarily easy or difficult, they are just change. Entrusting our life to Christ, is 100% faith, 100% of time. Can you let go, face the changes and follow Jesus? Revd Rosie COLLECT Lord, you have taught us that all our doings without love are nothing worth: send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whoever lives is counted dead before you. Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen READINGS – RELATED 1 Kings 19.15-16, 19-end Then the Lordsaid to him, ‘Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was ploughing. There were twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, ‘Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.’ Then Elijah said to him, ‘Go back again; for what have I done to you?’ He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 16 Preserve me, O God, for in you have I taken refuge; I have said to the Lord, ‘You are my lord, all my good depends on you.’ All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, upon those who are noble in heart. Though the idols are legion that many run after, their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, neither make mention of their names upon my lips. The Lord himself is my portion and my cup; in your hands alone is my fortune. My share has fallen in a fair land; indeed, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel, and in the night watches he instructs my heart. I have set the Lord always before me; • he is at my right hand; I shall not fall. Wherefore my heart is glad and my spirit rejoices; my flesh also shall rest secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Death, nor suffer your faithful one to see the Pit. You will show me the path of life; in your presence is the fullness of joy and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Galatians 5.1, 13-25 For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Luke 9.51-end When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his face was set towards Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, ‘Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?’ But he turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’ To another he said, ‘Follow me.’ But he said, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’ Another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.’ Jesus said to him, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Lord God, we are here today to offer you our sacrifice of worship. We are here to listen to your word, to bring you the concerns of our hearts and to join together in fellowship. Speak to us through scripture, hymns, prayer and silence. Grant us ears to hear, hearts to listen and lives prepared to do your will. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. As your disciples in this age we offer our prayers on behalf of the earth we share with so many others. May we learn to respect the earth as your sacred gift for all, and do what we can to repair the damage we have caused through our consumerism, greed and carelessness. Guide us to an ecological conversion that will give hope to those who suffer most now, those who have done least to cause the problems, so all can enjoy a future where there is enough for all, not just the few. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Father, we pray for the many people living and dying in conflict areas, not only those we read of on the front page. We pray for Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan with another earthquake, North and South Sudan, Zimbabwe – and we yearn for peace for them. Peace in your terms motivated by your love not human greed for power and control. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Here in such a different environment, we also have problems and we pray for those willing to take on the responsibilities of government and leadership at national and local levels, church and state, parish and food bank, for Rev. Rosie and Canon Brian in their leadership. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for all whose lives have been touched by tragedy, whether by accident or a deliberate act. For those who mourn, immerse them in your love and lead them through the darkness into your arms and light. For those who comfort, in words or what is left unspoken, fill each heart with love. We ask this through Jesus Christ, whose own suffering brought us life, here and for eternity. Show us how to pray with love for all who need your healing – for Karl, Don, Sarah and Hugh, Joanna, Pam and Patricia, for Hugo, Blake, Reuben, Sam and Holly, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Jackie, Christopher, Norman, Diane and Suzanne, and for Frank. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. And we pray for those who have recently died, for Pauline Trigwell, David Hossack, and for those whose anniversaries of death fall at this time. Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. And we thank you for the beautiful weather, for being able to meet outside with less fear of infection. Help us to remember anyone who is housebound but can be visited in a garden, or just with windows open, or taken for a walk. Help us to take advange of playgounds and parks to make new contacts or offer support in some way. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Loving Father, we thank you for feeding us at the supper of your Son: sustain us with your Spirit, that we may serve you here on earth until our joy is complete in heaven, and we share in the eternal banquet with Jesus Christ our Lord.
