| † St Andrews Proclaiming Christ in Clewer 24 Apr 2022 The Second Sunday of Easter |
THE EUCHARIST SERVICE IS IN ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30 Welcome When the risen Jesus breathes on his disciples, they receive the Holy Spirit. As we meet to worship in his name, let us open ourselves to accept his spirit breathe into every particle of our being. Our first reading this morning is from Acts chapter 5, 27-32. Peter and the apostles stand up to the council, proclaiming Jesus as Lord and Saviour. The second reading is from the Revelation to John chapter 1, verses 4-8. John proclaims God as the beginning and the end; the past, the present and the future. The Gospel reading is from St John chapter 20, 22 to the end. He breathed on them and said to them “Receive the Holy Spirit” Canon Brian COLLECT Almighty Father, you have given your only Son to die for our sins and to rise again for our justification: grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness that we may always serve you in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen READINGS Acts 5.27-32 When they had brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them, saying, ‘We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.’ But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than any human authority. The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Saviour, so that he might give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.’ This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 118.14-end 14 The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. 15 Joyful shouts of salvation sound from the tents of the righteous: 16 ‘The right hand of the Lord does mighty deeds; the right hand of the Lord raises up; the right hand of the Lord does mighty deeds.’ 17 I shall not die, but live and declare the works of the Lord. 18 The Lord has punished me sorely, but he has not given me over to death. 19 Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter and give thanks to the Lord. 20 This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. 21 I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me and have become my salvation. 22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. 25 Come, O Lord, and save us we pray. Come, Lord, send us now prosperity. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; we bless you from the house of the Lord. 27 The Lord is God; he has given us light; link the pilgrims with cords right to the horns of the altar. 28 You are my God and I will thank you; you are my God and I will exalt you. 29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures for ever. Revelation 1.4-8 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING John 20.19-end When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Everlasting God, as Jesus appeared in the locked room to show his disciples the beginning of a new world, draw us closer so that we, like Thomas, can examine the wounded hands and feet of Jesus in order to know and understand the depth of his love for us. Let us therefore approach the throne of God in confidence as we pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Gracious God, look down with love upon our Church here in Clewer as day by day we struggle to be a body worthy of Jesus’ name, an Easter People whose song is Alleluia. Be with the Clergy and Officers as they focus on spreading the Good News as we give thanks for the Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Creator God, we raise before you our world, especially praying for peace in Ukraine, reconciliation and healing in all places of war, hatred and terrorism. We pray that the nations of this world may be united and subject to the rule of the Risen Christ, through whom and for whom all things were created. We pray especially for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth; may her rule be guided and influenced by the example set by your son who lives and reigns as King of Kings. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Loving God, your Son remained with his disciples after his resurrection, teaching them to love all their neighbours as themselves. As his disciples in Clewer, we offer our prayers on behalf of the community where we are privileged to live and our friends and neighbours with whom we interact day by day. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Almighty God, we pray for all who are sick and for all who are in hospital that they may be aware that the Lord is with them in their troubles. We pray especially for Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Norman and Diane, Patricia, and Frank. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Loving God, surround all who mourn this day with your continuing compassion. Do not let grief overwhelm those who are bereaved, or turn them against you. When grief seems never-ending, take them one step at a time along the journey of death and resurrection. We pray for Martin Stone, all those recently departed this life, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Father God, you have called us to follow you. As you hear our prayers make us faithful in responding to your call. Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. REVD ROSIE’S FUNDRAISING My fundraising challenge this year is to Swim40Lent. Swim 40 times during Lent. Now you may think this is not much of a challenge for me, but let me assure you it is! I’ll have to make the time, never mind the weather and it is a freezing 6.5 degrees today! AND not in a wetsuit! I’ve chosen ShelterBox/Ukraine to support those affected by this intolerable and unjust situation. The charity provides warm blankets, cooking equipment, water filter kits and tents etc. When I have been swimming I can appreciate a warm blanket and hot drink, hence this charity. I’m aiming to raise £500. I’d be very grateful for your support and donations. Sometimes we feel helpless in these situations and we have no idea what each day will bring or what we can do to help. Lent is a time to look deep into ourselves, our relationship with God and God’s people. Please continue to pray for peace.
