| THE EUCHARIST SERVICE WILL BE HELD IN PERSON AT ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30AM Welcome! Last Sunday we gave out sunflower seeds during our Mothering Sunday service, and the church porch has been open everyday for people to help themselves to seeds and place yellow and blue ribbons on the trees etc. Something small that we can do to show our support for others. Our Prayers and Bears families were busy planting their seeds outside the front of St Agnes on Friday, and Canon Brian has tied his ribbons onto his front door. This small act has brought opportunities to share what we are doing and why. It is about our faith, nurturing others and giving back to God. We turn now towards the cross. Today is Passion Sunday, the journey with Jesus to Jerusalem is beginning, we are on our way to the betrayal, the trial, the cross, Holy Week and Easter. We are into the last couple of weeks of Jesus’ life. On this Passion Sunday we reflect on the humility of Mary, as she lets down her hair and uses expensive perfume to anoint Jesus’ feet, much to the annoyance of Judas. Judas- self centred, horrified, perhaps envious of Mary’s actions? Mary, down on her knees, wiping Jesus’s feet, displaying humility, showing her devotion, giving her all. Her actions show us that giving to God must come from a love that is sacrificial and wholehearted. This Passiontide and Holy Week, may we give our all and journey with humble and grateful hearts, astonished by what God in Jesus did for each of us on the cross- what he endured so that we might be reconciled to God, restored and made clean: brought back from the dead. Blessings Revd Rosie COLLECT Most merciful God, who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ delivered and saved the world: grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross we may triumph in the power of his victory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen READINGS – ONLY THE GOSPEL READING WILL BE USED Isaiah 43.16-21 Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. Psalm 126 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter and our tongue with songs of joy. Then said they among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’ The Lord has indeed done great things for us, and therefore we rejoiced. Restore again our fortunes, O Lord, as the river beds of the desert. Those who sow in tears shall reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed, will come back with shouts of joy, bearing their sheaves with them. Philippians 3.4b-14 I, too, have reason for confidence in the flesh. If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All Glory to you, O Lord. John 12.1-8 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, ‘Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?’ (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Everlasting God, you call us to your service and so we ask that you make us worthy of your calling; and to hear us as we intercede and give thanks to you through Jesus Christ your Son. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Creator God, we pray for the nations of the world and for their right dealing one with another, especially between Russia and Ukraine where we pray for a cessation of hostilities and a declaration of peace. May barriers of race, creed, gender and colour be broken down and political freedom established where there is oppression and suppression of new ideas. We pray for educational development and for a more just economic structure which pays people fairly for their labour. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Father God, we thank you that no matter how widely spread throughout the world our families may be, our hearts may be joined together in prayer. We also thank you for the means of modern technological communication that enable us to keep so closely in touch with those we love, which means we not only hear our loved ones but also see them. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Gracious God, look mercifully upon those whose lives have been shattered by illness. Help them and those who care for them to be freed from resentment and give them the strength to seek your will, whatever it might be, in every situation. We pray today especially for Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Norman and Diane, and Patricia. All Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Merciful God, we remember the slenderness of the thread which separates life from death, and the suddenness with which it can be broken. Help us also to remember that whatever occurs in life we are surrounded by your love. Help those bereaved by the loss of a loved one to find in your love peace and reassurance. We pray today especially for Stephen Collins and Martin Stone, all those recently departed this life, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Eternal God, giver of love and power, your Son Jesus Christ has sent us into all the world, to preach the gospel of his kingdom, confirm us in this mission, and help us to live the good news we proclaim in all that we do and say. Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen Intercessions from the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy A PRAYER FOR UKRAINE God of all peoples and nations, Who created all things alive and breathing, United and whole, Show us the way of peace that is your overwhelming presence. We hold before you the peoples of Ukraine and Russia, Every child and every adult. We long for the time When weapons of war are beaten into ploughshares When nations no longer lift up sword against nation. We cry out to you for peace; Protect those who only desire and deserve to live in security and safety Comfort those who fear for their lives and the lives of their loved ones Be with those who are bereaved. Change the hearts of those set on violence and aggression And fill leaders with the wisdom that leads to peace. Kindle again in us a love of our neighbour, And a passion for justice to prevail and a renewed recognition that we all play a part in peace. Creator of all hear our prayer And bring us peace. Make us whole. All Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you: give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us, but are alive and reign, now and for ever. EGG HUNT Donations for Easter flowers and eggs for the hunt would be welcome – thank you. DOES ANYONE REMOMBER THE PEARCE FAMILY? We have had this enquiry: I’m very much hoping to trace a family who may have attended your church between 1965/66 and 2006. Richard Pearce and Jennifer Pearce lived at 349, Maidenhead Road. Their children are John, and Rachel who was born in Windsor in 1966. I wonder if there might be someone in your congregation who might remember this family and perhaps even know to which area they moved? If you do, please let Jane or Stuart know, or email office@clewerparish.org REVD ROSIE’S FUNDRAISING My fundraising challenge this year is to Swim40Lent. Swim 40 times during Lent. Now you may think this is not much of a challenge for me, but let me assure you it is! I’ll have to make the time, never mind the weather and it is a freezing 6.5 degrees today! AND not in a wetsuit! I’ve chosen ShelterBox/Ukraine to support those affected by this intolerable and unjust situation. The charity provides warm blankets, cooking equipment, water filter kits and tents etc. When I have been swimming I can appreciate a warm blanket and hot drink, hence this charity. I’m aiming to raise £500. I’d be very grateful for your support and donations. Sometimes we feel helpless in these situations and we have no idea what each day will bring or what we can do to help. Lent is a time to look deep into ourselves, our relationship with God and God’s people. Please continue to pray for peace.
