A Peal!

On Saturday 12th September 2009, to mark 100 years since the first peal was rung at St Andrews (on 9th September 1909), a peal was rung on the newly re-hung bells. A peal is a change ringing method rung to 5000 or more changes. Since St Andrews has six bells the maximum number of changes possible is 720 so the extent of 720 must be rung 7 times to give 5040 changes.

This peal took just under 3 hours to complete.
