Proclaiming Christ in Clewer

Pews News: October 2015

Welcome, in the name of Jesus Christ, to this house of prayer.

Rector’s Ramblings

It’s that time of year again! The days are beginning to get noticeably shorter, the leaves are beginning to change colour and the shops are full of new season coats.

Perhaps the summer has been too long for you and you are ready for the change?

Courgettes always seem such a good idea, but we can soon have our fill and always manage to leave one lurking in the undergrowth and are surprised at the size it can go … and then we never eat it!

How lucky we are to be able to grow things in the soil here, we have a rich and plentiful harvest and our supermarkets provide those exotic things we can’t grow.

Harvest is a time of thanksgiving for God’s creation, whether we are growers or not, but not everyone has the time, wherewithal or inclination to have a go at growing their own fruit and veg. Some do not have safe ground let alone a garden or pots. Taking time to grow or farm land means you are there to look after it, it’s your piece of dirt. This harvest time we are reflecting on those whose lives are unstable, who have no firm ground on which to build or rebuild their lives. Refugees, the homeless, those living in difficult conditions. A safe home and a garden can all too easily be taken for granted and the choice of what we will eat tomorrow is not a worry. But for some it is, it is a great worry, a burden that makes shoulders drop, heads hang, eyes hollow and feet heavy. As Christians we have a duty of care for others and we cannot help but be moved by the plight of the refugees, and we must also remind ourselves of the homeless in our own neighbourhood and the families who need to rely on food banks. Sometimes the issue becomes too great and we don’t know what to do with it.

The key words I offer for this month are SHARE, CARE and PRAYER. Are we sharing our lives and resources with each other and those in need? If we are then we are able to learn more about each other and the world around us and provide more care, physically or emotional and spiritually. Prayer underpins our whole lives, through it we are able to bring people and situations before God. This is what Christians are made for! The harvest is through us, our lives, our prayers, our actions.   GIVE THANKS with a grateful heart.                             Revd Rosie

Calais Action Gifts – practical support for Refugees – thank you for your items

Gifts of Money to will go towards helping Us (formerly USPG) support refugees arriving in Europe.

They have issued an appeal for donations to fund the Diocese in Europe as it reaches out to refugees arriving throughout Europe.

The Diocese in Europe is working on the frontline with refugees, and has asked Us to be the official agency for Anglican churches in Britain and Ireland to channel donations for its work.

Your donations will go towards the Rapid Response Fund  and will help the diocese to provide emergency medical support, food, shelter and pastoral care for refugees. Initially, there will be a particular focus on the situation in Greece and Hungary.

Bishop in Europe David Hamid writes: ‘Thank you so much for your support at this critical time. Us will collect the funds and transfer consolidated funds to the diocese for use in Greece, Hungary and where there is need. We have an efficient process agreed that will help our partners working on the ground.’

God will provide…through us!
