![]() I AM THE GATE FOR THE SHEEP Welcome I have always lived my life in or near towns, not in the middle of nowhere, and definitely not in the countryside surrounded by sheep, so the language of shepherds and sheep can feel a little alien! For those of us familiar with going to church, the language of sheep and shepherds is very familiar and in fact, I remember having to write an essay on what it means to be a shepherd whilst at theological college. Although I’m a townie, I know that sheep need a shepherd to take care of them. We can see sheep in the fields as we travel through the countryside, and it is important that the sheep are placed where they can get all the things that they need to stay healthy. A shepherd must place them in good pastureland where they can get water as well as food. In the dry area where Jesus lived, it was important that shepherds led their flocks to good pasture and streams of water. In those days the shepherd walked ahead of his sheep and the sheep followed him. The staff the shepherd carried had a curved bit at the top so that if a sheep got stuck in a bush or down a cliff, the shepherd could pull it out. If you’re a fan of Country File, you’ll know that sheep can get into all sorts of trouble! When Jesus spoke about sheep, we know he was speaking about people. He describes us as his sheep. Do you sometimes get all tangled up in a problem, in frustration? And the more you try to get free, the more stuck you become? Do you sometimes feel afraid and don’t know which way to turn? Do you sometimes feel helpless, or weak, or lost or in danger? Aren’t we all a bit like sheep? When we come into a relationship with Jesus, we enter a place of safety where those who would exploit and abuse us cannot come. Jesus offers not only a safe place to rest- the sheepfold- but total freedom to come and go into abundant pasture. This is Jesus not as gatekeeper but one who genuinely brings the fullness of life. Blessings for your week Revd Rosie COLLECT Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life: raise us, who trust in him, from the death of sin to the life of righteousness, that we may seek those things which are above, where he reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. one God, now and for ever. All Amen READINGS Acts 2.42-end They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 1 Peter 2.19-end For it is to your credit if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. ‘He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’ When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL READING Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. John 10.1-10 ‘Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.’ Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Lord, you are our Shepherd, and we pray that you will protect us from all danger by keeping watch over us, guide us towards green pastures where we can be nourished by your word and lead us to pure still waters where we can be refreshed by your love. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Lord, you are our Shepherd, and we pray for our church leaders that they too may care for and lead us by following the example of love and service you demonstrated in your earthly ministry. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Lord, you are our Shepherd, and we pray for the world that was given to us as an inheritance, on the understanding that we would care for it as shepherds care for their flocks. Teach us to look after our beautiful planet and care for it wisely, whilst sharing its gifts more fairly and working together with all of its inhabitants to ease its sufferings. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Lord, you are our Shepherd, and we pray for our families and friends who need to hear the voice of Jesus the Good Shepherd; who knows every one of them by name; who offers rest to the weary and salvation to sinners and life eternal to all who accept him into their lives. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Lord, you are our Shepherd who seeks out the lost and the sick. We pray for those we know who are lost in illness and ask you to reassure them with the knowledge that you are watching over them in their suffering and that many are praying for their recovery. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Lord, you are our Shepherd, so we pray for those who have died and for those who ache with sorrow in their loss of a loved one. May those we now name before you find rest in the Spirit’s embrace as you welcome them into the great sheepfold, safe in your keeping for ever. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Lord, you are our Shepherd, and we thank you for this time we have shared in prayer and thanksgiving. In the week ahead we ask you to lead us down the streets of our towns and villages and guide us safely along the roads and motorways we travel. A Prayer for the Coronation Lord God, in your power you provide for your people and rule over them in love: Grant to your servant Charles, our King the spirit of wisdom and government, that being devoted to you with his whole heart, he may so wisely govern, that during his reign your church may be protected, and Christian devotion may continue in peace; that so persevering in good works to the end, he may by your mercy enter your everlasting kingdom; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God now and for ever. Amen. Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Merciful Father, you gave your Son Jesus Christ to be the good shepherd, and in his love for us to lay down his life and rise again: keep us always under his protection, and give us grace to follow in his steps; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
