WELCOME

The Bishop of Reading, the Rt Revd Olivia Graham, retires this weekend. The first female Suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Oxford, Bishop Olivia will lay down her crosier on 30 September after five years of dedicated service. The Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft, Bishop of Oxford, paid tribute to her work: “Bishop Olivia has been an outstanding servant leader in the Diocese of Oxford throughout her ordained ministry serving in several parishes; as a Parish Development Advisor; as Archdeacon of Berkshire and in these last five years as the Bishop of Reading. Olivia has inspired love and confidence across the Area and the wider Diocese both inside and beyond the Church.

“As Bishop, she has put supporting parishes and clergy at the very heart of her ministry yet has also offered inspiring leadership on the environment, world mission and as lead bishop for safeguarding. I know Bishop Olivia and Keith will be greatly missed across the diocese and especially in Berkshire when Olivia retires, but I know Olivia will want to be fully engaged in supporting God’s mission in her remaining months in post.”

Reflecting on 27 years in ministry, Bishop Olivia said it had been a privilege to be a part of so many milestone moments in people’s lives.

From all of us here in Clewer, thank you for being a kind and generous Bishop, we wish you well and God’s blessing for this next journey in life.

The Church family at St Andrews Clewer.

COLLECT

Everlasting God,
you have ordained and constituted the ministries of angels and mortals in a wonderful order:
grant that as your holy angels always serve you in heaven,
so, at your command,
they may help and defend us on earth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS

Genesis 28.10-17

Jacob left Beer-sheba and went towards Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place – and I did not know it!’ And he was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Revelation 12.7-12

And war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming,‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to youwith great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!’

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

John 1.47-end

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, ‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael asked him, ‘Where did you come to know me?’ Jesus answered, ‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’ Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’ Jesus answered, ‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’ And he said to him, ‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray, for the Church and for the world, and let us thank God for his goodness.

[The Church] Cleanse the Church of all that may hinder the spread of the Gospel. Give wisdom to discern where there is offence, and grace to set it right. Make your people strong in the power of prayer.

And we pray for the Church, and all Bishops and Priests, throughout the world. We pray especially for our Archbishops Justin and Stephen. And in our area, we pray for our Bishops Stephen and Olivia, for Revd Rosie and Canon Brian. We pray for all decision makers in the Church.

In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the Churches in Pakistan. Please pray also for the Churches in these Dioceses Brasil, Nigeria, Jerusalem, California, and Southern Africa.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

[The World] Give grace to all who work for good in the world, not knowing that they are in your service. Enlighten them with the perfect knowledge of your majesty and with power to cast out evil and promote your Kingdom.

We pray for all those who work for peace, negotiators, and world leaders.  We pray for the all the countries of the world in a state of war; we pray especially today for the people of Yemen, Sudan, Gaza and Lebanon.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

[The Local Community] Strengthen us in prayer, so that we may in our families and in all our lives be sustained by your continual presence. Guide us as we intercede for those known to us who are distressed and afflicted.

And in our local community, we pray for everyone in Clewer, Dedworth, and in Windsor. Clewer Green School, Mrs Branch, Mr Seymour, and all the staff, pupils, staff and governors. The Busy Buttons CORE Charity and for all the work that they do. For all our Care Homes, for the safety of residents and staff. We pray also for Windsor Christian Action, and the work of the Homeless Project, Street Angels, FoodShare, and the Alma Beacon Hub.

And in our Parish Cycle of Prayer, we pray for all who live or work in Cleves Court, Carter Close, St Johns Road, Gordon Road, Dawson Close, Convent Road, and Bailey Close.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

[People in Need] Comfort and relieve the sick, especially those who have asked for our prayers. Bless the Church’s ministry of healing. Grant perseverance to all who have become discouraged in prayer.

We pray for all in need, especially today: Sharon, Vivienne, Stef, John F, Joanna, Jane P, and Tom B. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn.

And we also pray for those whose needs we know, and those known to God alone.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

[The Departed] Accept the prayers which we offer for those who have died. Though we see them no longer, unite us with them in our intercessions, that we may be one in your love.

And with confidence in the love of Christ who died for sinners, we commend the souls recently departed this life, John Allbless, James Baxter, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time.

Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord,
and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

We join our prayers with those of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Andrew, St Agnes, and all the Saints, as we commend ourselves, one another, and those we have prayed for, to your unfailing love.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

POST COMMUNION
Lord of heaven,
in this eucharist you have brought us near to an innumerable company of angels
and to the spirits of the saints made perfect:
as in this food of our earthly pilgrimage we have shared their fellowship,
so may we come to share their joy in heaven;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
