Sea of Galilee Pacific Ocean WELCOME The one day I took a trip in a boat out onto the Sea of Galilee the clouds came over, the mist seemed to fall down off the mountains and the rain hammered us, it was not a smooth trip. I was determined to get the full experience and, not put off by the rain, I stood out on deck at the front of the boat and held on tightly. Whilst on sabbatical during my trip to visit my brother in California, I had the opportunity to go out on a boat whale watching. Well, the day was booked and paid for but the night before there had been an almighty storm and a small tsunami due to the earthquake trembles. The skipper assured us that although the sea looked ‘quite’ choppy, we would be fine, and the trip went ahead. Now I don’t really have good sea legs, and it was very obvious that most of the other passengers didn’t either, but I kept my gaze steady and focussed on looking for whales. I’ve never been in a boat with waves like that! My brother and I got our feet anchored and with one arm wrapped around a rail, the other had to be free for photos, we put our trust in the skipper to get us out and back alive and if we even glanced at the tail of a whale then that would be a bonus! Well, we arrived back in one piece with the tail of a whale on camera, stomach intact, very much shaken but not stirred. The story of Job is well known- the man who had everything and lost it all, including his health and happiness. Yet he hung onto his faith in God, despite the urgings of his supposed friends to blame God. Psalm 107 picks up this theme of God present in the tempest, all seems lost in the storm but, in crying out to God, those in danger were rescued. The letter to the Corinthians, Paul gives a list of disasters that anyone can experience but how the importance of opening your heart and putting your trust in Jesus Christ will bring joy in those times. In Mark’s gospel Jesus’ disciples were discovering what it meant to trust Jesus. As the hymn goes…We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll; fastened to the rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love! Blessings for your week. Revd Rosie COLLECT O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that with you as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal that we lose not our hold on things eternal; grant this, heavenly Father, for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen READINGS Job 38.1-11 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: ‘Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. ‘Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements – surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? ‘Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? – when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, and said, “Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped”? This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God 2 Corinthians 6.1-13 As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, ‘At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.’ See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labours, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honour and dishonour, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see – we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. In return – I speak as to children – open wide your hearts also. This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God Gospel Reading Mark 4.35-end Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side.’ And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great gale arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?’ And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Mighty God, when the waves of life threaten to overwhelm us forgive us if we blame you or others for our troubles. Teach us to find you in the storms of life and give us the faith those early disciples lacked to always believe that you will bring calm and peace. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Everlasting God we pray for your church here in Clewer. We ask for your blessing on our work as we seek to create a church community that welcomes visitors and strangers, provides a refuge for those who feel threatened or alone, a refuge from life’s troubled waters. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Loving God, as we see the brokenness of our world we pray for healing among the nations; for food where there is hunger; for freedom where there is oppression; for joy where there is pain; that your love may bring peace to all your children. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Holy God, we thank you for the joy of human love, and for all those among whom we live and work. We especially pray for those among our friends and families who do not know you, or whose faith has been shaken. Help them to see that “We have an Anchor that keeps the soul, steadfast and sure while the billows roll, fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love!” Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Merciful God when our lives feel chaotic and desolate because of illness or sorrow, help us to hear your holy word for by that word Jesus calmed the storm and by it he healed and made people whole. We pray for those who have requested our prayers; help them to triumph over their storms, and help them put their trust in You and in the knowledge and skills of the doctors and nurses who are treating them. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Loving God we pray for those saddened by the death of someone close and dear to them, for members of our families who have died and whose anniversary we recall. Help us to experience the comfort of the Holy Spirit within us, and the fellowship of the church family around us until we are reunited once more in your heavenly kingdom. Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer Gracious God, help us to know that the one who calmed the waves on the Sea of Galilee is present with us day by day and that he cares for us and can calm the waves of our lives. Help us to trust more fully and more deeply in you in all that we are involved with in the days to come. Merciful Father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen From the Chaplaincy of the Holy Spirit Costa Blanca POST COMMUNION Eternal God, comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken, you have fed us at the table of life and hope: teach us the ways of gentleness and peace, that all the world may acknowledge the kingdom of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
