| † St Andrews Proclaiming Christ in Clewer 13 Feb 2022 3rd Sunday before Lent ![]() |
| THE EUCHARIST SERVICE WILL BE HELD IN PERSON AT ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30AM Dear friends, Jesus calls us to work with him to build a world of peace and happiness. Today we ask for the spirit of discernment to help us to recognise the choices we have to make if we are to be the people of God, the people that God wants us to be. The first reading is from Jeremiah, chapter 17 verses 5-10. There are two types of people – those who put their trust in human beings, and those who trust in God. The second reading from the first letter to the Corinthians chapter 15 verses 12-20. St Paul is passionate in his trust that God raised Jesus from the dead, because without that trust his whole understanding of God’s purpose collapses. And the gospel reading from St Luke chapter 6 verses 17-26. The teaching of Jesus commonly known as the beatitudes. Jesus turns expectations upside down. Those who are hungry or poor, or who weep, are blessed, whereas those who are wealthy or who rely on worldly things have received Your consolation. Canon Brian COLLECT Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity: give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen READINGS Jeremiah 17.5-10 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; Thus says the Lord: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse – who can understand it? I the Lord test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. Psalm 1 Blessed are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the assembly of the scornful. Their delight is in the law of the Lord and they meditate on his law day and night. Like a tree planted by streams of water bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither, whatever they do, it shall prosper. As for the wicked, it is not so with them; they are like chaff which the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked shall not be able to stand in the judgement, nor the sinner in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish. 1 Corinthians 15.12-20 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ – whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. All Glory to you, O Lord. Luke 6.17-26 He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. ‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. ‘Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. ‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. ‘Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. ‘Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. ‘Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS – MULLE PRICE Gracious God, we come to you again this day to a place we love and with people we care about. We thank you especially for the fact that we are free to worship you, unlike so many people who literally risk their lives in other parts of your world. Help us to look on the impossibilities of their world with the eyes of faith and pray that their circumstances will change. Lord, hear us Lord, graciously hear us Father, we pray for the many leaders, of church and state who are trying to make peace in the face of fanatics and the power besotted. We are called to change oppressive systems and human structures that work against the poor, the needy, the sick and vulnerable. We ask so much of the leaders to avoid more killing, displacement, broken families and lost children, to bring about a world in peace not a world in pieces. We ask you to give them courage and commitment, not to take the easy way out and resort to more armaments and the resultant fighting. Lord, hear us Lord, graciously hear us And help us, Father, to keep COP26 constantly in our minds as we acknowledge our failure to live responsibly as part of your creation. We have taken what we want, without considering the consequences. We have wasted and discarded, without thought for the future. Open our hearts and minds to the signs of our times, to the groaning of creation, so that we may turn from our greed and lack of vision and see a world being made anew in Jesus Christ our Lord. Lord, hear us Lord, graciously hear us Clewer seems a long way from the horrors of so many places in your world. But here too we have people with problems. We pray especially for the sick – for the children – Hugo, Blake, Reuben, Sam and Holly, for Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Frank and Barbara, for Norman, Diane and Suzanne, for Bill, Christopher, Alan, Jackie and Patricia. In a moment of silence we bring before you those we know particularly, who need your healing in whatever way you deem it …………….. And let us also remember before you the many carers in our communities, people whose lives have often been totally changed by the needs of another, and by covid. We remember also Refugees, Prisoners the Homeless and all who mourn those who have died and whose anniversaries fall at this time. And in the parish we remember Clewer Green School and its staff and for Rev Rosie and Jane who are governors. Lord, hear us Lord, graciously hear us In our Anglican Cycle of Prayer we pray for the Church of Korea. Please pray also for the Churches in these Dioceses: Kigeme (Rwanda), Kigezi (Uganda), North Kigezi (Uganda), Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Kilmore, Elphin & Ardagh (Ireland), and especially for our Link Diocese, Kimberley & Kuruman (Southern Africa). Lord, hear us Lord, graciously hear us Lastly Father, we pray for Revd Rosie and for Canon Brian in their care for us, and for our churchwarden Stuart and for Jane constantly helping out. And we pray for ourselves – we ask you to help us to be continually aware of Your presence with us, to trust You for the material things but to concentrate on the bits that matter much more. To live one day at a time and to value the day to day things, of whatever colour or shape, not just the highlights. Father, we ask you to accept these prayers for the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour. All Amen PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Merciful Father, who gave Jesus Christ to be for us the bread of life, that those who come to him should never hunger: draw us to the Lord in faith and love, that we may eat and drink with him at his table in the kingdom, where he is alive and reigns, now and for ever.
