Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance 2024

Remembrance brings with it is even more important today than it ever has been, the story of war must continue to be told.

Why? Because more than ever we need to work for peace. War has many faces, we are fighting everywhere, every day, physically and emotionally. Between countries, between communities, between neighbours, within families, with climate change, with viruses, wars for financial gain and political power. People are at war in their hearts.

If we are to truly honour the poppy, we must take a serious look at the war in our hearts now and bring peace. Jesus teaches the secret of happiness to his followers because God’s dream is of a world where all the children of God are loved and cared for, and no one is left out. Blessed are you who work for peace, for you are the voice of God, blessed are you who comfort the sad, for you are the arms of God. Love your enemies and pray for them, for they too are children of God (Archbishop Tutu’s version).

As you wear your poppy- ask God to see it as a prayer for peace.
Lest we forget!
We will remember them.

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while life shall last,
And our eternal home.

COLLECT

Almighty Father,
whose will is to restore all things
in your beloved Son, the King of all:
govern the hearts and minds of those in authority,
and bring the families of the nations,
divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin,
to be subject to his just and gentle rule;
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS – THESE WILL BE USED AT THE EVENING EUCHARIST

Jonah 3.1-5, 10

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, ‘Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’ So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, ‘Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’ And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Hebrews 9.24-end

For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

Mark 1.14-20

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’

As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake – for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS FOR REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY (T&S)

Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict,
and ask that God may give us peace:
for the service men and women
who have died in the violence of war,
each one remembered by and known to God;
may God give peace.
All   God give peace.

For those who love them in death as in life,
offering the distress of our grief
and the sadness of our loss;
may God give peace.
All   God give peace.

For all members of the armed forces
who are in danger this day,
remembering family, friends
and all who pray for their safe return;
may God give peace.
All   God give peace.

For civilian women, children and men
whose lives are disfigured by war or terror,
calling to mind in penitence
the anger and hatreds of humanity;
may God give peace.
All   God give peace.

For peacemakers and peacekeepers,
who seek to keep this world secure and free;
may God give peace.
All   God give peace.

For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership,
political, military and religious;
asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve
in the search for reconciliation and peace;
may God give peace.
All   God give peace.

O God of truth and justice,
we hold before you those whose memory we cherish,
and those whose names we will never know.
Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world,
and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm.
As we honour the past,
may we put our faith in your future;
for you are the source of life and hope,
now and for ever.
All   Amen.

POST COMMUNION

God of peace,
whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom
and restored the broken to wholeness of life:
look with compassion on the anguish of the world,
and by your healing power
make whole both people and nations;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen

THE NEW SOUND SYSTEM IS IN!

Our new sound system was installed on Wednesday and Thursday last week. Please bear with us, there may be teething problems while we get used to it.

One thing we would like help with: we know that the audio loop works, and has actually improved. If anyone uses a hearing aid, could they try the loop system, and let us know how it is for you?

The system was mostly paid for by a development grant from Oxford Diocese. Thank you to everyone who donated or raised money to make up the shortfall.
