† St Andrews
Proclaiming Christ in Clewer
10 July 2022
The 4th Sunday after Trinity

THE EUCHARIST SERVICE IS IN ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30

Welcome

Our first reading is from Deuteronomy chapter 30 verses 9-14.
God exhorts the people to choose life by following God’s gentle and easy commandments.

The second reading is from the letter to the Colossians chapter 1 verses 1-14.
Paul praises the Colossians and prays that they may continue in their good ways.

And the gospel reading is from St Luke chapter 10 verses 25-37.
Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan to illustrate that everyone is our neighbour. The story of the Good Samaritan tells us that everyone is our neighbour and needs our care and compassion. And it also challenges us about the structures and attitudes of our own society. If we delve more deeply for example we might ask whether a long term solution might be to challenge the prejudices which lay behind the man being left for dead by two men who are in religious ministry. Then we might turn our attention to our own society in which the poorest people are reliant on charities to feed and house them. Perhaps Jesus would also have us think about our own social problems and the prejudices and injustices of our own day. Do we both individually and as a society regard and treat each and every member of society as equal with an equal chance in life?

COLLECT

O God, the protector of all who trust in you,
without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:
increase and multiply upon us your mercy;
that with you as our ruler and guide
we may so pass through things temporal
that we lose not our hold on things eternal;
grant this, heavenly Father,
for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
All Amen

READINGS – RELATED

Deuteronomy 30.9-14

And the Lord your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the Lord will again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your ancestors, when you obey the Lord your God by observing his commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?’ Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?’ No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Psalm 25.1-10

1  To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul;
      O my God, in you I trust;
   let me not be put to shame;
      let not my enemies triumph over me.
2  Let none who look to you be put to shame,
   but let the treacherous be shamed and frustrated.
3  Make me to know your ways, O Lord,
   and teach me your paths.
4  Lead me in your truth and teach me,
   for you are the God of my salvation;
      for you have I hoped all the day long.
5  Remember, Lord, your compassion and love,
   for they are from everlasting.
6  Remember not the sins of my youth
      or my transgressions,
   but think on me in your goodness, O Lord,
      according to your steadfast love.
7  Gracious and upright is the Lord;
   therefore shall he teach sinners in the way.
8  He will guide the humble in doing right
   and teach his way to the lowly.
9  All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth
   to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.
10  For your name’s sake, O Lord,
   be merciful to my sin, for it is great.

Colossians 1.1-14

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow-servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Luke 10.25-37

Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read there?’ He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ And he said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’

But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ Jesus replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.” Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?’ He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray, for the Church and for the world, and let us thank God for his goodness.

May the Church, rejoicing in the redemption won by Christ, show herself worthy of her calling and be abundant in good work.. Give to all clergy and lay ministers the grace to be both faithful in duty and compassionate to need.

And we pray for the Church, and all Bishops and Priests, throughout the world. We pray especially for our Archbishops Justin and Stephen. And in our area, we pray for our Bishops Stephen and Olivia; for Revd Rosie and Canon Brian. We pray for all decision makers in the Church.

In the Anglican cycle of prayer we pray for the Churches in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, India, South Sudan, and South Africa.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

Give light to this world where pressure of living too often leads to indifference and hardness of heart … Through the great commandment of love teach all to live as neighbours.

We pray for all those who work for peace, negotiators, and world leaders.  We pray for the all the countries of the world in a state of war; we pray especially today for the people of Afghanistan. We also pray for peace in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Nigeria.

And we pray especially today for Ukraine, in the words of the prayer from our Archbishops, Justin and Stephen:

God of peace and justice,
we pray for the people of Ukraine today.
We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons.
We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow,
that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them.
We pray for those with power over war or peace,
for wisdom, discernment and compassion
to guide their decisions.
Above all, we pray for your precious children, at risk and in fear,
that you would hold and protect them.
We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
Amen.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

Make us and all in our families ready to serve those who need our help … Keep us alert and sensitive to signs of distress … Give strength to all in this community who care for the hurt and afflicted.

And in our local community, we pray for everyone in Clewer, Dedworth, and in Windsor. We pray for our Church school, Clewer Green, the head teacher Martin Tinsley and all the pupils, staff and governors. For all our Care Homes, for the safety of residents and staff.

And in our Parish Cycle of Prayer, we pray for all who live in Hermitage Lane,  Longbourn, Maidenhead Road, Rays Avenue, Wells Close, Vale Road, and Buckland Crescent.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

Have mercy on victims of crime and violence … Mend their brokenness and restore them to wholeness of life. Help those who support them in their trouble..

We pray for all in need, especially today: Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Norman and Diane, Patricia, Frank, and Mulle. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn.

And we also pray for all who have asked for our prayers, those whose needs we know, and those known to God alone.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

Receive the souls of the faithful into their inheritance of light … Deliver them from all evil and grant them rest in the kingdom of heaven.

And with confidence in the love of Christ who died for sinners, we commend the souls recently departed this life, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time.

Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord,
and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer

We join our prayers with those of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Andrew, St Agnes, and all the Saints, as we commend ourselves, one another, and those we have prayed for, to your unfailing love.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Eternal God,
comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken,
you have fed us at the table of life and hope:
teach us the ways of gentleness and peace,
that all the world may acknowledge
the kingdom of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
