The Church’s Count on Nature – Saturday 8th – Sunday 16th June 2024
St Andrews Wild Worship – 16 June 2024 3.00pmWELCOME

The Diocese recognises the potential of churchyards for supporting nature, and is actively encouraging churches to get involved. We already have many birds making their homes in our churchyard, with great tits nesting in the belltower walls, and nesting opportunities amongst all the trees. This week the churchyard has been full of the sound of newly fledged great tits, blue tits and robins. But nature is more than just birds!

Liaising with the Borough, who maintain our churchyard, we have come up with a plan to keep the majority of the churchyard regularly mown, but leave some areas untouched (around the edges and under some trees, and the grass area behind the church). Untouched areas are important for giving shelter and allowing insects to breed in safety.

This week is Churches Count on Nature week, and we will be participating next Sunday in our Wild Worship. We hope to identify as many plants, bugs and birds as we can, and record them on iNaturalist, a national database. For those with smart phones there is an app which can be downloaded – instructions here:
https://www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk/about-recording/add-your-records/

Come along to Wild Worship to see how it works, have help identifying what you find, and then continue logging creatures you see in the churchyard to help to build a picture of the life that we help to support.

COLLECT

Lord, you have taught us
that all our doings without love are nothing worth:
send your Holy Spirit
and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love,
the true bond of peace and of all virtues,
without which whoever lives is counted dead before you.
Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS

Genesis 3.8-15

They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ The Lord God said to the serpent,
‘Because you have done this,
cursed are you among all animals
   and among all wild creatures;
upon your belly you shall go,
   and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
   and between your offspring and hers;
he will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.’

2 Corinthians 4.13-5.1

But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture – ‘I believed, and so I spoke’ – we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

Mark 3.20-end

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Then he went home; and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone out of his mind.’ And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.’ And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.

‘Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin’ – for they had said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’

Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.’ And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS

Father God, we approach your throne of grace with our concerns, our burdens and our thanksgiving for all your people throughout the world.  Help us to put our trust in you and in our Saviour Jesus Christ who taught us that you love us as a parent and want only what is right for us.

May the seeds that are being planted in our Parish grow into branches that reach out into every part of our area, and help us as we try and focus on the big issues that sometimes threaten to overwhelm us.
Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for Christian Church throughout the world and especially for churches in places where religious faith is suppressed or where Christianity is an unwelcome minority.
Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Creator God we pray for our world which seems to be forever caught up in violence and conflict. Through the media we are witnesses to terrorist violence in so many parts the world. As we continue to pray for peace and goodwill towards all people we also pray for the innocent victims and their families caught up in conflicts which are not of their making.

We pray for our world leaders and for our Royal Family.  We also pray for our community leaders and those in public office dealing with difficult situations.
Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Father God in today’s Gospel your son Jesus gives us a hard teaching regarding families and so we ask you to help us to be gentle, with our families and friends who are not also part of our Christian family . Give us, we pray, the calm that makes for consideration and the respect for others that makes us courteous. Take from us hard words and the cynical look. Let us be to others as we would wish them to be to us.
Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Loving God we think now of those in need in our own community and further afield; the elderly, the housebound and those in care homes, hospital and hospice. We also remember the victims of violence, abuse or cruelty.  We give thanks for all those who care for the sick within the family, and for all our medical and voluntary services.
Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for those who face the pain of grief at the loss of a loved one. Help us to support all those who mourn, both with our prayers and with practical help both this day and in the days and weeks to come. We remember before God those who have died and ask that those bereaved by their passing are aware of the light of Christ which eternally shines and brings so much hope.
Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord we ask you to lead us into the coming week, Help us to believe that you are close by us, keep us from making mistakes and help us never to disappoint you. When we face hard decisions or difficult work, when we enjoy ourselves and have fun with others may we know that you share these times with us.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen

POST COMMUNION

Loving Father,
we thank you for feeding us at the supper of your Son:
sustain us with your Spirit,
that we may serve you here on earth
until our joy is complete in heaven,
and we share in the eternal banquet
with Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
