Proclaiming Christ in Clewer

09 Jan 2022 – Baptism of Christ

THE PARISH EUCHARIST SERVICE WILL BE HELD IN PERSONAT ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30AM

Dear friends,

We celebrate the baptism of Christ, and the affirmation he receives, that he is indeed God’s beloved son.  Let us give God the glory and worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Let the whole earth stand in awe of him.

We too are given the assurance at our baptism that we are God’s beloved sons and daughters. Sometimes we may not hear that clearly, or perhaps we cannot believe that we are lovable and precious to God. When we forget this, we can remember that immediately after his baptism, Jesus spent a long and testing time in the wilderness, when perhaps, as he did on the cross, he felt abandoned by his father. He would have needed to hold on in prayer to his experience of affirmation, and the blessing, when he was tempted to doubt it. When we feel alone, and lost in the wilderness, we too need to hold on in prayer to the times when we’ve been affirmed and blessed.

And we are called to give assurances of God’s love to others, who are struggling with their faith. We are also called to proclaim the Good News to all who judge themselves harshly, so that in Jesus we see love and forgiveness, because we are indeed precious in his sight, and he wants to keep us safe, just like wheat gathered into the granary.

With every good wish,
Canon Brian

COLLECT

Eternal Father,
who at the baptism of Jesus
revealed him to be your Son,
anointing him with the Holy Spirit:
grant to us, who are born again by water and the Spirit,
that we may be faithful to our calling as your adopted children;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
or
Heavenly Father,
at the Jordan you revealed Jesus as your Son:
may we recognize him as our Lord
and know ourselves to be your beloved children;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
All Amen

READINGS

Isaiah 43.1-7

But now thus says the Lord,
   he who created you, O Jacob,
   he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
   I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
   and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
   and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God,
   the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
   Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you.
Because you are precious in my sight,
   and honoured, and I love you,
I give people in return for you,
   nations in exchange for your life.
Do not fear, for I am with you;
   I will bring your offspring from the east,
   and from the west I will gather you;
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up’,
   and to the south, ‘Do not withhold;
bring my sons from far away
   and my daughters from the end of the earth –
everyone who is called by my name,
   whom I created for my glory,
   whom I formed and made.’

This is the word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.

Psalm 29

1  Ascribe to the Lord, you powers of heaven,
   ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2  Ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name;
   worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
   the God of glory thunders;
   the Lord is upon the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is mighty in operation;
   the voice of the Lord is a glorious voice.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees;
   the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf
   and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord splits the flash of lightning;
    the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
8 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe
   and strips the forests bare;
   in his temple all cry, ‘Glory!’
9 The Lord sits enthroned above the water flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore.
10The Lord shall give strength to his people;
     the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace.

Acts 8.14-17

 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

This is the word of the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
All Glory to you, O Lord.

Luke 3.15-17, 21-22

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to you, O Christ.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION – STUART COCKMAN

Let us pray, for the Church and for the world, and let us thank God for his goodness.

Fill your Church with the Holy Spirit, that all who respond to your call may be witnesses to your name Bless those who come to be baptized and those who stand as their godparents or sponsors.

And we pray for the Church, and all Bishops and Priests, throughout the world. We pray especially for our Archbishops Justin and Stephen. And in our area, we pray for our Bishops Stephen and Olivia; for Revd Rosie and Canon Brian. We pray for all decision makers in the Church.

In the Anglican cycle of prayer we pray for the Church in Chile.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Come with power to the world, to make your name known and honoured in every place. Guide those you have chosen to be your agents in places of authority, that they may rule with justice and break down all barriers to the truth.

We pray for all those who work for peace, negotiators, and world leaders.  We pray for all the countries of the world in a state of war; we pray especially today for the people of Afghanistan. We also pray for peace in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Nigeria.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Bless our families with your presence, helping us so to live that what we do shall be pleasing to you. Bless all parents in this community, to bring up their children in faith and obedience to your word.

And in our local community, we pray for everyone in Clewer, Dedworth, and in Windsor. We pray for our Church school, Clewer Green, the head teacher Martin Tinsley and all the pupils, staff and governors. For all our Care Homes, for the safety of residents and staff.

And in our Parish Cycle of Prayer: Please we pray for all who live or work in St Leonards Hill, Bridewell, Chestnut Drive, Gratton Drive, Fairlawn Park, Dower Park, Poolmans Road, Snowdon Close, Turnoak Park, and Brudenell.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Have mercy on those who suffer persecution for confessing your name. Pardon those who use their power to act against human rights. Open their eyes to see the way of love.

We pray for all in need, especially today: Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Alan, Norman and Diane, and Patricia. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn.

And we also pray for all who have asked for our prayers, those whose needs we know, and those known to God alone.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Receive with mercy the souls of those who have died in the faith of Christ. Open the kingdom of heaven to them that they may enter into eternal life.

And with confidence in the love of Christ who died for sinners, we commend the souls recently departed this life, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time.

Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord,
and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We join our prayers with those of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Andrew, St Agnes, and all the Saints, as we commend ourselves, one another, and those we have prayed for, to your unfailing love.

Merciful Father,
accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Lord of all time and eternity,
you opened the heavens and revealed yourself as Father
in the baptism of Jesus your beloved Son:

All Amen

MESSAGE FROM REVD ROSIE

Before I go on sabbatical I just wanted to say a few words.

This is a personal thank you to all those who helped in any way with the Clewminations. The whole event was spectacular!

A special thanks goes to Lee and the team from Woody’s Café, who put up all the high lights, and took them down again, thank you for giving up your time to do this, it is really appreciated.

If you live locally and were able to visit, please could you let us know your thoughts, we’d love to hear from you. Email the office@clewerparish.org.
We will start to then think about Christmas 2022 and how we develop our mission and outreach at this special time of year.

The pandemic has meant doing things differently and we have really enjoyed being ‘outside’ together and, will continue to creatively share the message of God’s love in Clewer.

My prayer for you all is that you stay well and safe and have a blessed 2022. A new year, another chance to reconnect with each other, reconnect with faith, reconnect with God who loves you abundantly and constantly. I look forward to new opportunities to connect with you all!

Wishing you all Happy New Year🎉
Thank you again and blessings 🙏
Revd Rosie
