† St Andrews
Proclaiming Christ in Clewer
6th July 2025
The Third Sunday after Trinity

WELCOME

This week I took a group of children from Clewer Green to Winton House. We were invited to a special event to remember the 10th anniversary of the death of Sir Nicholas Winton. The children had not visited this particular home before so it was an added adventure.  On arrival we rang the door bell and waited to be welcomed in. Having signed in on the screen, everyone then settled in meeting the residents, carers and trustees. It was an adventure but there was also the element of uncertainty, having to talk to people we had never met before, in a place they had not been before, and of course there was the promise of BBQ lunch…would it live up to expectations!

And they were all fantastic and yes the BBQ was excellent.

But the main point of the event was to remember the life of Sir Nicholas Winton, if you’ve never heard of him, google him, as I can’t do him justice in a few words, or watch the film about his life…One Life, Anthony Hopkins plays his character.

The highlight of our visit was meeting his son, also called Nicholas Winton, what a privilege to hear about a man who made such a significant difference to peoples lives just before the outbreak of WWII. Sir Nicholas was an ordinary man who responded with compassion and action to a situation he found himself in. He took risks for the sake of rescuing children and never once made a thing about it, he got on with it and didn’t seek reward.

In today’s gospel we hear the story of Jesus sending out the 70, sent out in pairs to share the gospel message, not to make a big thing of it, just go out, meet people, share the love of Jesus in everyway, everywhere, everyday.

You never know who you will meet or what impact you will have on their lives, kind words, offers of help, a listening ear go a long way. But the most important thing is…we do it because of faith, our faith in Jesus Christ and reflecting his love for us and his Spirit to guide us, we will have everything we need to help make the world a better place.

Whose ‘door’ have you knocked on lately and who have you welcomed in?

Blessings for your week
Revd Rosie

On the third Sunday after Trinity, we continue to rejoice in the miracle of three. Our loving creator came amongst us in our Saviour and remains with us today through the Holy Spirit.

The first reading is Isaiah 66 verses 10 to 14
The image of God as a mother departs from the traditional image of the Father and encourages us to rejoice that God’s love is for all.

The second reading is Galatians 6, 1 to 6 and 7 to 16
Paul finishes his letter to the Galatians by reiterating that they must not try to modify the spiritual freedom of the Gospel with the rituals of Judaism. They must keep focused on the freedom that comes with Jesus.

And the Gospel is Luke 10, 1 to 11 and 16 to 20
Jesus sends 70 disciples to prepare his way, urging them not to let strictly religious rules obstruct the good news of God’s kingdom of peace. We’re all part of God’s ministry team. We can all join the squad, train hard and help to spread the good news of God’s love to every town and place. Jesus trusts us all to share that love and often deeds are more eloquent than words.

Later in this chapter, he tells the parable of the Good Samaritan with his emphasis on helping our neighbour, whoever that is. And when the 70 returned from their mission in his name, Jesus encouraged them to rejoice that their own names were written in heaven. So we can rejoice today that his team sheet is big enough for all our names.

COLLECT

Almighty God,
you have broken the tyranny of sin
and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts
whereby we call you Father:
give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service,
that we and all creation may be brought
to the glorious liberty of the children of God;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS (only the Gospel reading will be used in the morning)

Isaiah 66.10-14

Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
   all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
   all you who mourn over her –
that you may nurse and be satisfied
   from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
   from her glorious bosom.

For thus says the Lord:
I will extend prosperity to her like a river,
   and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and you shall nurse and be carried on her arm,
   and dandled on her knees.
As a mother comforts her child,
   so I will comfort you;
   you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
   your bodies shall flourish like the grass;
and it shall be known that the hand of the Lord is with his servants,
   and his indignation is against his enemies.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Galatians 6.7-16

Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.

See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised – only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule – peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

Luke 10.1-11, 16-20

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, “Peace to this house!” And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, “Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.”

‘Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.’

The seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!’ He said to them, ‘I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ

INTERCESSIONS

Everlasting God, we make our prayers now for all people, everywhere, both close to us and far away.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Holy God, whenever we start to get offended by your generosity or open-mindedness, give us the grace to repent and join your rejoicing. Guard the Church against self-righteousness and all rules and limits which you would not own, but always keep before us the rule of love.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Creator God, we thank you for people who have risked and sacrificed much to provide us with all the benefits and comforts of our modern life. Help us to encourage our young people to follow their examples and to build on their legacies so that future generations may enjoy continued progress but with constant thought for our responsible stewardship your creation.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Father God, we thank you for our families and friends and for the communities both church and secular that we belong to. We ask that you help us with our relationships, help us make our strong ones to be stronger, our broken ones to be healed and our new ones to continue growing.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Gracious God, we pray for all who suffer in body, mind or spirit and for those who care for them. We pray for the sick; for those who mourn; for those without faith, hope or love. We pray too for the bereaved.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Mighty God, your love reaches beyond the grave. At the end of our days on earth be with us and with those we love and with those whom we love and have gone before us.  We pray now for those who have recently died.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Almighty God, we pray for ourselves; as we go from your house today to start the week ahead, we ask that in all we do, we may walk more closely with you at our side safe in the knowledge that your fatherly love and care knows no bound

Merciful Father
accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

POST COMMUNION

O God, whose beauty is beyond our imagining
and whose power we cannot comprehend:
show us your glory as far as we can grasp it,
and shield us from knowing more than we can bear
until we may look upon you without fear;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Amen

MY TIME OUTING

Canon Brian has kindly arranged for us to visit Pishill Church on Wednesday, 9th July.  Pishill Church overlooks the Stonor valley in the Chiltern Hills, it was built in 1854 to replace a Norman church.  It has many interesting features and Canon Brian describes it as ‘quirky’ – how quirky we will find out when we visit!

Pishill Church is about 5 miles north of Henley and the journey time is approximately 40 minutes but we need to allow time for possible delays.  So please meet at church to leave no later than 1pm, to arrive at Pishill Church by 2pm.

Please consider supporting the work of the Baby Bank. You can donate your second-hand baby clothes/supplies or even volunteer your time.
