† St Andrews
Proclaiming Christ in Clewer
03 July 2022
The 3rd Sunday after Trinity
THE EUCHARIST SERVICE IS IN ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30
Welcome

One of my favourite films is The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, starring Ingrid Bergman. It is a wonderful story about Gladys Aylward, a Christian woman who felt called to be a missionary in China. Gladys Aylward was one of my Mother’s heroes, and she loved to recall the story when she went to hear Gladys give a talk at their local mission chapel in Bradford in the 1950s. We even have Gladys’ autograph in Mother’s book. Gladys had a real, lived calling to go out to China, and her faith helped find a way, and her greatest achievement was when she was appointed Minister for Feet, and helped to stop the custom of foot binding.

Our readings this week continue to call us to follow. Jesus sends out his disciples into the world to learn how to share the Good News; not an easy job and he gives them advice. Sometimes we are given things to do which we don’t really want to, a ‘yes, but’ moment again. But it is for their own good, and the disciples learnt and grew in faith and confidence.

This weekend sees us out in the Pirate Park at ‘Rock the Rec’, with our tent, being a Christian presence in our community. Who knows what conversations will be had or prayers said, or connections made, but Jesus calls us like the 70, and only God knows what will happen next!

Please keep this mission opportunity in your prayers this weekend, and if you are in the park, pop in and visit us.

Blessings
Revd Rosie
COLLECT

Almighty God,
you have broken the tyranny of sin
and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts whereby we call you Father:
give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service,
that we and all creation may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
All Amen
READINGS – RELATED

On Sunday only the Gospel will be read

Isaiah 66.10-14

Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
   all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
   all you who mourn over her—
that you may nurse and be satisfied
   from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
   from her glorious bosom.

For thus says the Lord:
I will extend prosperity to her like a river,
   and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and you shall nurse and be carried on her arm,
   and dandled on her knees.
As a mother comforts her child,
   so I will comfort you;
   you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
   your bodies shall flourish like the grass;
and it shall be known that the hand of the Lordis with his servants,
   and his indignation is against his enemies.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Psalm 66.1-8

Be joyful in God, all the earth; •
   sing the glory of his name;
      sing the glory of his praise.
Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds! •
   Because of your great strength
      your enemies shall bow before you.
‘All the earth shall worship you, •
   sing to you, sing praise to your name.’
Come now and behold the works of God, •
   how wonderful he is in his dealings with humankind.
He turned the sea into dry land;
      the river they passed through on foot; •
   there we rejoiced in him.
In his might he rules for ever;
      his eyes keep watch over the nations; •
   let no rebel rise up against him.
Bless our God, O you peoples; •
   make the voice of his praise to be heard,
Who holds our souls in life •
   and suffers not our feet to slip.

Galatians 6.7-16

Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.

See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised—only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule—peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Luke 10.1-11, 16-20

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, “Peace to this house!” And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, “Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.”

‘Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.’

The seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!’ He said to them, ‘I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
INTERCESSIONS

Everlasting God, we make our prayers now for all people, everywhere, both close to us and far away.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy God, whenever we start to get offended by your generosity or open-mindedness, give us the grace to repent and join your rejoicing. Guard the Church against self-righteousness and all rules and limits which you would not own, but always keep before us the rule of love.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Creator God, we thank you for people who have risked and sacrificed much to provide us with all the benefits and comforts of our modern life. Help us to encourage our young people to follow their examples and to build on their legacies so that future generations may enjoy continued progress but with constant thought for our responsible stewardship your creation.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Father God, we thank you for our families and friends and for the communities both church and secular that we belong to. We ask that you help us with our relationships, help us make our strong ones to be stronger, our broken ones to be healed and our new ones to continue growing.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Gracious God, we pray for all who suffer in body, mind or spirit and for those who care for them. We pray for the sick; for those who mourn; for those without faith, hope or love. We especially pray for Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Norman and Diane, Patricia, and Frank. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Mighty God, your love reaches beyond the grave. At the end of our days on earth be with us and with those we love and with those whom we love and have gone before us.  We pray now for those who have recently departed this life, Pauline Trigwell, and David Hossack, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, we pray for ourselves; as we go from your house today to start the week ahead, we ask that in all we do, we may walk more closely with you at our side safe in the knowledge that your fatherly love and care knows no bound
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

O God, whose beauty is beyond our imagining
and whose power we cannot comprehend:
show us your glory as far as we can grasp it,
and shield us from knowing more than we can bear
until we may look upon you without fear;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Amen
