† St Andrews Proclaiming Christ in Clewer 02 March 2025 The Sunday Next before Lent |
![]() Welcome We meet to worship the God who shines in glory, to listen to God’s word and to follow the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. The first reading is Exodus 34, 29 to the end. After God gives him the Ten Commandments, Moses’ face shines with the light of God’s glory, so he keeps his face veiled from the people. The second reading is 2 Corinthians 3, 12 to 4, 2. Turning to Jesus enables us to see God clearly. God’s glory is reflected in our faces, and we are transformed in the likeness of the living God. The Gospel is Luke 9, 28 to 36. God’s glory shines in the face of Jesus as he stands on the mountain with Moses and Elijah. God speaks to the firm Jesus as God’s Son. In deliberately seeking God in prayer and reflecting on our stories and experiences in the light of Jesus, we are enabled to see God more clearly. And in listening to Jesus, God’s Son, and truly following his example, we are transformed in the image of Jesus’ likeness and reflect God’s glory in the world. Canon Brian COLLECT Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. now and for ever. Amen READINGS Exodus 34.29-end Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterwards all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him. This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God 2 Corinthians 3.12-4.2 Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God Gospel Reading Luke 9.28-36 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah’—not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!’ When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Holy God, we are all companions on a spiritual journey and so as we travel together, let us pray together. Loving God, bless and guide our ministers and leaders as we enter the Lenten season of penitence and discipline, help us to be alive to your Spirit, who searches all our hearts and renews our lives as we offer our faith and obedience. We especially pray for the success of our Parish’s Lenten Activities starting next week. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Creator God, we know that we are part of the problems that the world faces, and we know that wherever there is resentment between people there will be tension. We pray that those who lead us and the other nations of the world will always try to solve issues in a peaceful way, and intervene in the world’s conflicts with forethought and common sense. We pray for our Royal Family and commend them to your love. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Father God, we pray for the families and communities we represent asking that we may have a spirit of generosity, respect and understanding at all times and may we always be able to help each other just as you love and help us. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Almighty God, we place into your gentle hands those who are sick. Ease their pain, and heal the damage done to them in body, mind or spirit. Be with them through the support of their friends, families, doctors and nurses and help them to be aware that they are surrounded with the prayers of the faithful. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Merciful God, we remember with thanksgiving before you those who have died in Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone. Be especially close to those they have left behind as they journey to the New Jerusalem. Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer Faithful God, in the week that lies before us may we reflect your love in the way that we live our lives so that the world can see that we are followers of Christ and by our words and actions draw others into his loving care. Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen Adapted from the Chaplaincy of the Holy Spirit Costa Blanca POST COMMUNION Holy God, we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ: may we who are partakers at his table reflect his life in word and deed, that all the world may know his power to change and save. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Listen to Revd Rosie’s Sermon from last Sunday LISTEN NOTICES EVENING SERVICE ON SUNDAY The Sunday evening service is Eucharist at 5.00pm. You can join those attending the service online, via the livestream from Canterbury Cathedral. An order of service is available online. Bishop designate Dave said: “I’m looking forward to being in Canterbury, to worshipping with hundreds of people, to praying with them and to being prayed for by them. What a huge privilege that is.” Bishop designate Mary added: “It is a really exciting time, of course, but quite a vulnerable time. And so your prayers to know in my heart the words of the service, that I offer this ministry through God’s strength and in the company of all God’s people.” This weekend, welcome services will take place at All Saints, High Wycombe (1 March) and Reading Minster (2 March), where both archdeaconries will welcome their new bishops and celebrate their ministry. This will be followed by an installation at Choral Evensong at Christ Church Cathedral, led by Bishop Steven on 8 March.
