The Bells

St. Andrew’s Bells, Clewer

Have you noticed something odd about the bells since Christmas?

If you enjoy listening to the bells, you may have noticed a difference in the last few months. Unfortunately one of the wheels has fallen apart and where there should be 6 bells ringing, now there are only 5.

The other bells, along with the frame, need to be repaired urgently before they resemble the play recently performed in Windsor, ‘And then there were None’.

A restoration project is therefore under way. Some of the money will be provided by charitable funding, but the ringing band needs to raise the rest themselves. A variety of ways of raising this are being planned and it is hoped that the local community will add its support.

The bells will be removed from the tower by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in September. We hope that they will be reinstalled before Christmas.

This quite costly project will be paid for by the church family, grants and some fund-raising events and donations, so any donations would be very welcome.

Cheques should be made out to ‘St Andrew’s Clewer Bell Fund’ and sent to:

St Andrew’s Church
Mill Lane

Thank you for your support

  1. It is now October. It would be most helpful for ringers generally to learn (via Dove’s Guide – see above website) if Clewer bells are now actually out of the tower. If not, we would very much appreciate being told as that happens.

    With thanks.

  2. Dear Revd Dr Baldwin,

With regard to the Clewer bells (at St Andrews church, Clewer, Windsor) the bells were taken down in September and are awaiting preparatory work on the tower to allow the bells to be rehung in a new frame for all 6 bells. Previously the bells were hung in 2 frames with the lighter bells being above.

    Regards
    Jane Cockman
