Remembrance Sunday

WELCOME
Last Sunday we celebrated All Saints, those people of faith who gave their life to Jesus and spent their lives telling others and loving their neighbour. At All Souls, on Sunday evening, we remembered our loved ones who have gone ahead of us to glory.  Remember November.
Now this weekend is our annual national Remembrance, remembering those who lost their lives in a time of war. Locally there will be our act of Remembrance at the war memorial, care home services and school assemblies.
When I was growing up Remembrance Sunday parades were a big part of our family life. Wherever we were in the world, Remembrance was a time of honour and reflection on the sacrifice of others and our commitment to peace. No questions asked, we stood still alongside those in uniform, wore our poppies on our Sunday best clothes and stamped our feet in time to the glorious sound of the marching band. As I grew older and became a parent myself, I would take the children along to the local army barracks for the Remembrance Day service and parade. And now, as parish priest, I’m leading that service of Remembrance beside our local war memorial. I see the same people every year and every year they point out their family name, a relative who served in one of the wars. On the 11/11 next week students from our parish schools will bring their poppies, and stand still for the silence, and read some of the names. It’s hard for them to comprehend the significance of this week, but the message that Remembrance brings with it is even more important today than it ever has been, the story of war must continue to be told.
Why? Because more than ever we need to work for peace. War has many faces, we are fighting everywhere, every day, physically and emotionally. Between countries, between communities, between neighbours, within families, with climate change, wars for financial gain and political power. People are at war in their hearts.
If we are to truly honour the poppy, we must take a serious look at reconciliation, starting with ourselves. Jesus teaches the secret of happiness to his followers because God’s dream is of a world where all the children of God are loved and cared for, and no one is left out. Blessed are you who work for peace, for you are the voice of God, blessed are you who comfort the sad, for you are the arms of God. Love your enemies and pray for them, for they too are children of God (Archbishop Tutu’s version).
As you wear your poppy- ask God to see it as a prayer for reconciliation and peace.
We will remember them.

Blessings for your week.
Revd Rosie

READINGS

Genesis 9.8-17

8Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9‘As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’ 12God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ 17God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.’

 Luke 12.1-7

1Meanwhile, when the crowd gathered in thousands, so that they trampled on one another, he began to speak first to his disciples, ‘Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy. 2Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 3Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops.4‘I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. 5But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! 6Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. 7But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
