![]() Pieter Breugel The Elder – Peasant Wedding Banquet THE EUCHARIST SERVICE IS IN ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30 Welcome Today’s bible readings invite us to look deep into the meaning of hospitality, recognising its place at the heart of the kingdom of God. Our place in it depends on God’s infinite and generous hospitality. We are called to reflect that hospitality in our relationship with others. The first reading from Proverbs 25.6-7 Here are words that echo those that we hear in the gospel for today. They call us to humility. The second reading is from the letter to the Hebrews 13.1-8 and 15-16 Here is some practical instruction about how to live the life of faith. We learn what it means for all our relationships, both those most intimate and those more distant. The Gospel reading is Luke 14.1, 7-14 Jesus tells two parables that call us to examine our heart and see what place humility has within us. Father Henri Nouwen said “A life is not a possession to be defended, but a gift to be shared”. Canon Brian COLLECT O God, you declare your almighty power most chiefly in showing mercy and pity: mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace, that we, running the way of your commandments, may receive your gracious promises, and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen READINGS Proverbs 25.6-7 Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence or stand in the place of the great; for it is better to be told, ‘Come up here’, than to be put lower in the presence of a noble. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 112 1 Alleluia. Blessed are those who fear the Lord and have great delight in his commandments. 2 Their descendants will be mighty in the land, a generation of the faithful that will be blest. 3 Wealth and riches will be in their house, and their righteousness endures for ever. 4 Light shines in the darkness for the upright; gracious and full of compassion are the righteous. 5 It goes well with those who are generous in lending and order their affairs with justice, 6 For they will never be shaken; the righteous will be held in everlasting remembrance. 7 They will not be afraid of any evil tidings; their heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. 8 Their heart is sustained and will not fear, until they see the downfall of their foes. 9 They have given freely to the poor; their righteousness stands fast for ever; their head will be exalted with honour. 10 The wicked shall see it and be angry; they shall gnash their teeth in despair; the desire of the wicked shall perish. Hebrews 13.1-8, 15-16 Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’ So we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?’ Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Luke 14.1, 7-14 On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he told them a parable. ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, “Give this person your place”, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, “Friend, move up higher”; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Let us pray, for the Church and for the world, and let us thank God for his goodness. Keep the whole Church steadfast in faith, ready to bear the cost of discipleship. May all Christian people honour one another in love, giving thanks for our redemption. And we pray for the Church, and all Bishops and Priests, throughout the world. We pray especially for our Archbishops Justin and Stephen. And in our area, we pray for our Bishops Stephen and Olivia; for Revd Rosie and Canon Brian. We pray for all decision makers in the Church. Give wisdom to those who have power in disputes between nations, that they may count the cost of conflict before it is too late. We pray for all those who work for peace, negotiators, and world leaders. We pray for the all the countries of the world in a state of war; we pray especially today for the people of Afghanistan. We also pray for peace in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Nigeria. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for your precious children, at risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Amen. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer We pray that our human loves and loyalties may be blessed but never turn us from our spiritual duty. Make us considerate to all who serve our daily needs. We pray for all who have fled from their homes, that they may find support and the way of reconciliation. We pray for all in need, especially today: Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Norman and Diane, Frank, and Louise. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn. And we also pray for all who have asked for our prayers, those whose needs we know, and those known to God alone. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer We give thanks for those who have fulfilled their work on earth and entered into rest. Grant them eternal life through the Cross that was borne for them. And with confidence in the love of Christ who died for sinners, we commend the souls recently departed this life, Patricia, Pam Hockedy, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time. Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer We join our prayers with those of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Andrew, St Agnes, and all the Saints, as we commend ourselves, one another, and those we have prayed for, to your unfailing love. Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Lord of all mercy, we your faithful people have celebrated that one true sacrifice which takes away our sins and brings pardon and peace: by our communion keep us firm on the foundation of the gospel and preserve us from all sin; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
