† St Andrews
Proclaiming Christ in Clewer
19 June 2022
The 1st Sunday after Trinity

THE EUCHARIST SERVICE IS IN ST ANDREWS CHURCH AT 10.30

Welcome

What a warm week we’ve had! Summer has definitely arrived and in fact next week we will have the summer solstice, the longest day. Having longer daylight always makes me feel better, I’m more of a summer person than a winter one, being stuck in doors with long spells of darkness, no thanks.

There are many things that affect our mental health, the list is endless depending on our individuality, so I won’t start labelling them here. But there are times in our lives when we don’t feel ourselves and it feels that humanity is now beginning to learn how to help people with acute mental health problems.

The readings this week include the story of Jesus healing the Gerasene demoniac. This is really complicated text to understand and it could be about mental health, but I certainly don’t want to say everyone with mental health issues are possessed by demons- absolutely not, that would be wrong!

I’m quite pleased that Canon Brian is preaching this week!

What I can say is that this text raises more questions:
What was it that was so bad that Jesus had to BANISH the demons from this man?
But banish into a herd of pigs?
And what about the Pig herd? His only source of income has just been sent flying off the edge of a cliff!
And one last question: what is it about this world that you feel needs to be BANISHED?

My list is endless, but what helps is giving it over to Jesus to heal so somehow, we can find peace.

Blessings for your week.

Revd Rosie

COLLECT

O God,
the strength of all those who put their trust in you,
mercifully accept our prayers
and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature
we can do no good thing without you,
grant us the help of your grace,
that in the keeping of your commandments
we may please you both in will and deed;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
All Amen

READINGS – RELATED

Isaiah 65.1-9

I was ready to be sought out by those who did not ask,
   to be found by those who did not seek me.
I said, ‘Here I am, here I am’,
   to a nation that did not call on my name.
I held out my hands all day long
   to a rebellious people,
who walk in a way that is not good,
   following their own devices;
a people who provoke me
   to my face continually,
sacrificing in gardens
   and offering incense on bricks;
who sit inside tombs,
   and spend the night in secret places;
who eat swine’s flesh,
   with broth of abominable things in their vessels;
who say, ‘Keep to yourself,
   do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.’
These are a smoke in my nostrils,
   a fire that burns all day long.
See, it is written before me:
   I will not keep silent, but I will repay;
I will indeed repay into their laps
   their iniquities and their ancestors’ iniquities together,
says the Lord;
because they offered incense on the mountains
   and reviled me on the hills,
I will measure into their laps
   full payment for their actions.
Thus says the Lord:
As the wine is found in the cluster,
   and they say, ‘Do not destroy it,
   for there is a blessing in it’,
so I will do for my servants’ sake,
   and not destroy them all.
I will bring forth descendants from Jacob,
   and from Judah inheritors of my mountains;
my chosen shall inherit it,
   and my servants shall settle there.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Psalm 22.19-28

Be not far from me, O Lord;
   you are my strength; hasten to help me.
Deliver my soul from the sword,
   my poor life from the power of the dog.
Save me from the lion’s mouth,
      from the horns of wild oxen.
   You have answered me!
I will tell of your name to my people;
   in the midst of the congregation will I praise you.
Praise the Lord, you that fear him;
   O seed of Jacob, glorify him;
      stand in awe of him, O seed of Israel.
For he has not despised nor abhorred the suffering of the poor;
      neither has he hidden his face from them;
   but when they cried to him he heard them.
From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
   I will perform my vows
      in the presence of those that fear you.
The poor shall eat and be satisfied;
   those who seek the Lord shall praise him;
      their hearts shall live for ever.
All the ends of the earth
      shall remember and turn to the Lord,
   and all the families of the nations shall bow before him.
For the kingdom is the Lord’s
   and he rules over the nations.

Galatians 3.23-end

Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING

Luke 8.26-39

Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me’ – for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) Jesus then asked him, ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘Legion’; for many demons had entered him. They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss.

Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, ‘Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.’ So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray.

The response to the bidding “Jesus Lord of Life” is “in your mercy hear us”

Let us be still in heart and mind in God’s presence.

Knowing that by ourselves we can do nothing we come to you bearing our weaknesses and frailties. We pray for grace to follow you faithfully and that in your strength we may reflect your love in action in the world. Show us the path you wish us to take casting aside ego, pride and ambition and to seek instead in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

We pray today for our Archbishops, Bishops, priests and deacons as they seek to support and sustain the church family, and the community more widely, in a time of the greatest uncertainty. Especially where Christians are persecuted.  We pray in particular for Revd Rosie and Canon Brian.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

Father we pray for peace in our war-torn world. We hold up to you the contradictions we feel trying to be peacemakers but feeling such anger and impotence as we see things unfold. We lay before you the terrible choices which must be made in times of war. We pray for the peoples of Ukraine; for the injured, the displaced and the hungry. We pray for the terrified children and their mothers who have had to leave behind their menfolk. We pray for the Russian people who are also paying a terrible price for war.

We don’t know how this will end Lord. We pray for the leaders of the free nations; for right decisions and a true and lasting peace.

We hold up to you all the nations which are ravaged by war, praying for peace and reconciliation.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

We pray for our country as prices rise and many are finding it hard to make ends meet. We pray for understanding on the part of Government to know just what it is like to have no reserves to fall back on and not to know where the next meal is coming from or how the bills can be paid.  We give thanks for the work of food banks and others seeking to alleviate poverty. May those in need be treated with compassion and dignity.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

We pray for our young and in particular older children whose education has been so disrupted, and those suffering mental problems. And also for young children who are struggling after being isolated at home when very small.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

We pray first for those who are ill; not just suffering from the Coronavirus but from all debilitating and concerning conditions. May they know the comfort of your presence and your voice calming their fears. We pray especially for Blake, Sam, Reuben, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Pam, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Norman and Diane, Patricia, and Frank. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

We pray for all those who are doing their best to care for the ill in our medical and care services whilst themselves being anxious for their own health and that of those they love. Lord, in serving others in this  selfless way they are doing what You have commanded in the clearest way possible Fortify and support them O Lord and let us be deeply grateful to them not just now but in the future.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

We pray for all those recently departed this life, Barry Armstrong, Pauline Trigwell, and David Hossack, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

We pray for all who are deeply affected by enforced self isolation: those who were very lonely before this crisis and those suffering mental illness, especially anxiety and depression.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

We pray for a world which struggles to live justly and in peace. We pray for those who have daily to search for food or walk a long way for clean water. We remember with sadness those whose lives are cut short by disease or violence and those who have fled their homes in fear. We pray for those who face persecution and torture with dignity.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

Despite our own pre-occupations we pray that you will give us the divine gift of generosity in our time, our love and our money, which are needed now more than ever.   We are so often niggardly and grudging in the sharing of our blessings. Let us give with a cheerful and unstinting heart.

Jesus Lord of Life in your mercy hear us.

Father we give you thanks for all the goodness in the world. For every act of love and neigbourliness; of courage and selflessness and for all that builds up the common good. Give us grace to be part of all that is positive, dwelling on the good and seeing all that the Holy Spirit is doing in our world.

Jesus, Lord of life, in your mercy hear us, accept our prayers, and be with us always. Amen.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Eternal Father,
we thank you for nourishing us
with these heavenly gifts:
may our communion strengthen us in faith,
build us up in hope,
and make us grow in love;
for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
