Trinity Sunday

“The Trinity” icon by Andrei Rublev, also known as “The Hospitality of Abraham”. It depicts three angels who visited Abraham and Sarah, symbolizing the Holy Trinity in Russian Orthodox tradition. The icon emphasizes spiritual unity, peace, harmony, mutual love, and humility.

WELCOME

God has spoken us into being, called us to life in Jesus and commissioning us in the power of the Holy Spirit. So this Sunday let us raise our voices in worship of the living God.

The first reading is Proverbs 8, 1-4 and 22-31.
The wisdom of God’s spirit is woven into the very act of creation and continues to offer guidance to those who listen to it.

The second reading is Romans 5, 1-5.
Reconciled to God through Jesus, we look to share his glory. Our hope is resilient through all circumstances as the Holy Spirit makes God’s love live within us.

And the Gospel is John 16, 12-15.
On the eve of his death, Jesus comforts his disciples. He foretells how the Holy Spirit will guide them in truth as he returns to God. Jesus is speaking on the eve of the greatest regime change ever. No mere shift of a human empire, but the dawning of the kingdom of God, the kingdom of the living God on earth. And this momentous arrival of a new world order will be ushered in through his death and resurrection. A mighty upheaval that will involve distress even as it heralds joy.

So how can this unprecedented event be endured, let alone understood? And perhaps we can think about those things on Sunday morning with things for us to remember or to forget!

CANON BRIAN

COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God,
you have given us your servants grace,
by the confession of a true faith,
to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity
and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity:
keep us steadfast in this faith,
that we may evermore be defended from all adversities;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS

Proverbs 8.1-4, 22-31

Does not wisdom call,
and does not understanding raise her voice?
On the heights, beside the way,
   at the crossroads she takes her stand;
beside the gates in front of the town,
at the entrance of the portals she cries out:
‘To you, O people, I call,
and my cry is to all that live.

The Lord created me at the beginning of his work,
the first of his acts of long ago.
Ages ago I was set up,
at the first, before the beginning of the earth.
When there were no depths I was brought forth,
when there were no springs abounding with water.
Before the mountains had been shaped,
before the hills, I was brought forth—
when he had not yet made earth and fields,
or the world’s first bits of soil.
When he established the heavens, I was there,
when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,
when he made firm the skies above,
when he established the fountains of the deep,
when he assigned to the sea its limit,
so that the waters might not transgress his command,
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
   then I was beside him, like a master worker;
and I was daily his delight,
   rejoicing before him always,
rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the human race.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Romans 5.1-5

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

John 16.12-15

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.

‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS (from TImes & Seasons)

We come boldly to the throne of grace,
praying to the almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
for mercy and grace.
We plead before your throne in heaven.

Father of heaven, whose love profound
a ransom for our souls has found:
We pray for the world, created by your love,
for its nations and governments …
Extend to them your peace, pardoning love, mercy and grace.
We plead before your throne in heaven.

Almighty Son, incarnate Word,
our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord:
We pray for the Church, created for your glory,
for its ministry to reflect those works of yours …
Extend to us your salvation, growth, mercy and grace.
We plead before your throne in heaven.

Eternal Spirit, by whose breath
the soul is raised from sin and death:
We pray for families and individuals, created in your image,
for the lonely, the bereaved, the sick and the dying …
Breathe on them the breath of life
and bring them to your mercy and grace.
We plead before your throne in heaven.

Thrice holy! Father, Spirit, Son,
Mysterious Godhead, Three in One:
We pray for ourselves,
for your Church, for all whom we remember before you …
Bring us all to bow before your throne in heaven,
to receive life and pardon, mercy and grace for all eternity,
as we worship you, saying,
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Amen.

POST COMMUNION

Almighty and eternal God,
you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
and live and reign in the perfect unity of love:
hold us firm in this faith,
that we may know you in all your ways
and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory,
who are three Persons yet one God,
now and for ever.
Amen
