![]() Sion’s Kirke Copenhagen Altar by Poul Steffensen WELCOME 2nd Sunday of Easter Hours after his resurrection, Jesus stood amongst the disciples and gave them his peace. Today, Jesus brings us that peace. We must consider our response. First reading Acts 2.14a-22, 32, Peter addresses the crowds, explaining that death could not hold Jesus in its power. He quotes the word of David, which, though written long before concern Jesus. Second reading 1 Peter 1.3-9, Peter praises God for the gift of new birth and the hope of the resurrection. Although his readers have had to follow trials and although they have not seen Jesus, they are receiving salvation as the outcome of their faith. The gospel reading John 20.19-end, Jesus appears to the disciples, who are hiding in a locked room gives them his peace and they receive the holy spirit as he breaths on them. A week later Jesus stands amongst them again. Thomas who is not present the first time, asks for proof. Jesus tells him those that believe without seeing are blessed. If we have engaged emotionally with the events of this Holy Week, we will, again, have felt the surprise of Easter day and the shock of Christ’s Easter peace. This, more than any other kind of peace, requires us to do something. Jesus sends us, as the father sent him, whatever that might mean in practice for each of us today. Christ’s peace is the beginning of something for us. We must not simply sit back and reflect on the amazing story. Rather, we must go out in the power of the Holy Spirit. Canon Brian SUNDAY SERVICES 12TH APR 2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER 10:30am Parish Eucharist 5:00pm Evening Prayer COLLECT Almighty Father, you have given your only Son to die for our sins and to rise again for our justification: grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness that we may always serve you in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen READINGS Acts 2.14a-22,32 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:17“In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” 22‘You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know— 32This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses. 1 Peter 1.3-9 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, 7so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. John 20. 19-end When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ 24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin ), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ 26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ 28Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.
