The Fourth Sunday of Easter

WELCOME

Today is known as Vocations Sunday in the Church of England, it is also our Annual Parochial Church Council Meeting. It is the time of year when we get together and review the last year and consider where God is calling us into the next year. Listening to God’s call is something all of us try to build in to our every day, and its not easy as there are so many distractions. And sometimes we just don’t notice or want to listen.

This week I heard my sister speaking on Radio 4. I was waiting for the bit in the programme whilst doing so jobs, and there was her voice, unmistakable, totally recognisable to me as she is my sister. Isn’t it strange when we hear ourselves, we often say…I don’t sound like that do I? We easily recognise the sounds of our babies crying or our family members from across a shop for example, we know their voices. But how do we recognise the voice of Jesus? Have you ever stopped to wonder what Jesus sounded like? There are many images of Jesus of course but would we recognise Jesus, our brother, our friend, if we heard his voice? Jesus’ voice could calm a storm, heal the sick, raise the dead, tell a good story, teach and people listened.

People hear the call of Jesus in many ways and more often people are aware of Jesus calling them through passages in the bible, hymns and songs as well as church buildings and art. People are moved to respond to Jesus due to the beauty and wonder of creation and sometimes Jesus uses other people to speak his message of love and acceptance to us.
It is one thing to hear the voice of Jesus and follow. It is another thing to be that voice for others. We have all heard the expression that in living the Christian life we may be the hands of Jesus doing his work here on earth. Let us also consider being the voice of Jesus bringing consolation and perhaps even wisdom to others.  After all, if Jesus is part of our life shouldn’t we sound like him?

We are all children of God, made in God’s image and through our baptism we are members of the body of Christ. At the very core of our being, we recognise the voice of Jesus, though we may not always be aware that it is him speaking. Responding to the call of Jesus can often require courage and teaches us to turn to God for hep and guidance, and we get that sense that this is right, and others will see it and encourage us to do it.

The call to follow Jesus is exciting and transforming and continues our whole lives. The shepherd knows his flock, the sheep hear his voice and respond. We are called to go deeper and further on; his voice never stops.

Keep listening for Jesus’ voice of love, hear and follow.

Blessings for your week
Revd Rosie

COLLECT

Almighty God,
whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life:
raise us, who trust in him,
from the death of sin to the life of righteousness,
that we may seek those things which are above,
where he reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS

Acts 9.36-end

Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, ‘Please come to us without delay.’ So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, ‘Tabitha, get up.’ Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

John 10.22-30

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
Glory to you, O Lord.

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.’ Jesus answered, ‘I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS

Grant that the Church, serving you in all good works, may bear witness to the Gospel of hope … May Christ the Good Shepherd keep his people free from sin and safe from danger.
Bless all who work for the relief of poverty and need … Open the hearts of the rich and powerful to give their help … Teach us all to remember that we can do no good thing without your grace.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Bless us in our families and in our work, that we shall always be ready to hear your voice and follow your commands … Keep us faithful to the fellowship of love in which we are called to be your own.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Have mercy on all who are in any kind of tribulation and distress … Bring them the peace of your presence, relieve their suffering and wipe away all tears from their eyes.
Lord, in your mercy
hear our prayer

Grant to the departed the vision of your glory and eternal life in the blessed company of heaven … Have mercy on all who mourn, and comfort them with assurance of resurrection and the ending of sorrow.

Merciful father
accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Amen

From Leading Intercessions by Raymond Chapman

POST COMMUNION

Merciful Father,
you gave your Son Jesus Christ to be the good shepherd,
and in his love for us to lay down his life and rise again:
keep us always under his protection,
and give us grace to follow in his steps;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
