WELCOME

 Trinity 4 “Faithfulness in the Small Things”

I’m sure the heat this week has challenged all of us! It’s at times like these that we check up on our neighbours, offer a cool drink and try our hardest to not let the heat get to our interactions, speaking and our listening. We can easily be consumed with ‘I can’t be bothered, I’m too hot’The readings for this Sunday quietly remind us that faithfulness is rarely loud, but it is always seen by God.

In Jeremiah, the prophet stands against voices that promise easy answers. True faithfulness, he says, is recognised not by how comforting a message sounds, but by whether it is rooted in God’s truth. It’s a reminder that discipleship sometimes means standing apart from the crowd, even gently saying, “I can’t go along with that.”

In Romans, Paul speaks of offering ourselves to God — not in dramatic gestures, but in the daily choices that shape who we become. Faithfulness is formed in the ordinary: the habits we nurture, the loyalties we choose, the voices we listen to.

And then Jesus, in Matthew, brings it all down to earth: “Whoever gives even a cup of cold water… will not lose their reward.”A cup of water. Not a miracle. Not a sermon. Not a heroic act. Just a small kindness offered in His name.It’s as if Jesus is saying: Don’t underestimate the holiness of the small things.A quiet word of encouragement. A patient response when you’re tired. A moment of generosity no one else notices. A choice to stay truthful when it would be easier not to.These are the places where the kingdom grows.So today, perhaps the invitation is simple: Be faithful in the small things. God sees them. God honours them. And through them, God works more than we imagine.

Blessings for a cooler week.

SUNDAY SERVICES 28TH JUNE
4TH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

10:30am Parish Eucharist
No Evening Prayer

COLLECT

O God, the protector of all who trust in you,
without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:
increase and multiply upon us your mercy;
that with you as our ruler and guide
we may so pass through things temporal
that we lose not our hold on things eternal;
grant this, heavenly Father,
for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

READINGS

Jeremiah 28.5-9

Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; 6and the prophet Jeremiah said, ‘Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfil the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. 7But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.’

Romans 6.12-end

Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.15 What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Matthew 10.40-end

‘Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; 42and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.’
