Proclaiming Christ in Clewer

WELCOME

2nd Sunday after Trinity – 14th June

Do you read a newspaper? And if you do, is it delivered to your home, or do you go to the shop to collect it? Do you watch the news on the television and have a particular bulletin that you watch, such as the lunchtime news, the 6 o’clock news, or the 10 o’clock news? Or do you have a news app on your phone and sit there over breakfast scrolling through the headlines? The first thing you see when you look at the news is the front page, the first story on the app, or the headlines that are read out on television. That’s where they put the most important news. Then there are other things, like the sports pages and sports news. What’s going on in the World Cup will be in the news a lot at the moment. Then there might be the weather. I quite often scroll down and look at local news for Berkshire. That’s usually how most of us start our day: by checking the news. Some of us even finish our day by sitting down with the 10 o’clock news. We can have news from all over the world at our fingertips.

The Bible tells us that Jesus travelled all around the countryside. He went to many different towns and villages, and everywhere He went He saw crowds of people who were lost and helpless, and it broke His heart. He said to His followers, “There are so many who need help, but there are not enough people willing to help them. Get on your knees and pray that the Lord will send workers to help them.” Sharing the Good News was so important to Jesus, and He wanted to make sure that everyone had the chance to hear it. When they had finished praying, Jesus called twelve of His followers to come to Him and said, “Go, heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, and cast out demons.” Do you know what else He said? “As you go, preach this message: ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is near.'” Now let’s think about that. That really is good news. The Kingdom of Heaven is near. It isn’t some far-off place where we’ll go at some far-off time. In fact, you might even say that it’s right here, right now. Of course, Jesus came to give us eternal life in heaven. But He also came so that we could have life and have it to the fullest right now, which we read about in John chapter 10. And that’s the Good News that everyone should hear. It should be on everybody’s front page, the main television headline, and the first news announcement on every app.

You know, there are still paper boys and girls who deliver newspapers to homes every day. All of my children, when they were younger, had jobs delivering newspapers. In those days, people expected their newspaper to arrive at a certain time. If they went out to collect it and it wasn’t there, then the paper boy or girl hadn’t done their job. If they didn’t get the news, somebody hadn’t done what they were supposed to do. Just as Jesus called the twelve disciples to deliver the Good News, He also calls you and me to deliver it. If we don’t do our job, someone won’t hear the Good News today.

At Wild Worship at school this week, the children continued exploring the story of the Trinity. They were asked to create a mandala pattern representing God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. As they looked around, they were asked to describe God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit to somebody who had never heard of Jesus. I wish I could have joined them. I wonder what they came up with? I’m sure it would have been really fantastic Good News!

The next time you pick up a newspaper or read a story online, remember that you have your own news to share: the Good News of Jesus. Don’t keep it to yourself. Share it with everyone you meet. As you do, you’ll be following in the footsteps of the twelve disciples, spreading the love of Jesus and changing the world one heart at a time.

Blessings for your week.

COLLECT

Lord, you have taught us
that all our doings without love are nothing worth:
send your Holy Spirit
and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love,
the true bond of peace and of all virtues,
without which whoever lives is counted dead before you.
Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

READINGS

Exodus 19.2-8a

2They had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. 3Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, ‘Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: 4You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, 6but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.’7 So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. 8The people all answered as one: ‘Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.’ Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

Romans 5.1-8

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

Matthew 9.35-10.8

35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; 38therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’10Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” 8Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.
