| † St Andrews Proclaiming Christ in Clewer 3rd August 2025 The Seventh Sunday after Trinity |
![]() This Sunday’s Gospel reading is from Luke 12 The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself,“What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?” WELCOME The seventh Sunday after Trinity. In the Eucharist we leave aside the cares and worries of the world as we come to hear of better motivations for our lives based on God’s vision for the world. First reading is Hosea 11, 1-11. Although God has loved Israel and called ‘his son’ out of Egypt, the people are bent on turning away. Even so, God will not destroy them but will return them to their home. The second reading is Colossians 3, 1-11. We are urged to seek those things that are above and leave behind the ways we once followed. There are no longer differences between us in race or station in life. Jesus is in us all. And the Gospel reading is Luke 12, 13-21. Someone in the crowd asks Jesus to tell his brother to share the family inheritance with him. Jesus uses the question as a way of explaining that being motivated only by the acquisition of money is pointless. In his parable, Jesus tells of a rich man who dies on the very night he is finally satisfied that he has accumulated enough wealth. Jesus calls us away from concern about money to a new and better focus. There is much to do and much to be enjoyed, but it isn’t motivated by anxiety about money. We could focus on building good relationships with the family God has given us. But most of all, our lives could be motivated by a desire to share the glory of God, the glory of the living God, which is the greatest treasure of all. Canon Brian COLLECT Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: graft in our hearts the love of your name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of your great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen READINGS – ONLY THE GOSPEL WILL BE READ IN THE MORNING [Genesis 18.20-32] or Hosea 11, 1-11 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and offering incense to idols. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them. They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me. The sword rages in their cities, it consumes their oracle-priests, and devours because of their schemes. My people are bent on turning away from me. To the Most High they call, but he does not raise them up at all. How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. They shall go after the Lord, who roars like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west. They shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the Lord. This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God Colossians 3.1-11 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). On account of these the wrath of God is coming on those who are disobedient. These are the ways you also once followed, when you were living that life. But now you must get rid of all such things-anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator. In that renewal there is no longer Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all! This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God Gospel Reading Luke 12.13-21 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’ But he said to him, ‘Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?’ And he said to them, ‘Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’ Then he told them a parable: ‘The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, “What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?” Then he said, “I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Everlasting God, we join together in praying to you for the needs the church, the world, our communities and ourselves, trusting in your love which reaches out from before the foundation of the world. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer Holy God, whenever we start to get offended by your generosity or open-mindedness, give us the grace to repent and join your rejoicing. Guard the Church against self-righteousness and all rules and limits which you would not own, but keep always before us the rule of love. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer Creator God, we pray for your world. Forgive us when we are ungrateful when spiritual blindness prevents us from appreciating the wonder of your creation and the endless cycle of nature. Forgive us for taking without giving; reaping without sowing. We pray for the farmers of the world many of whom still use those methods described by Jesus and we especially pray that they may be treated with fairness for their labours. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer Father God, we thank you for the love we share with our families and our friends. We recognise that they may have faults and they love us in spite of ours. Help us to be flexible and adaptable in all of our relationships and also capable of accepting constructive criticism. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer Loving God and Lord of life, we pray for the gift of courage to face up to and cope with illness. We pray for it for ourselves, and for those who we know need our prayers. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer We thank you for those who through their courage have come through illness and for those facing the reality that there is little light at the end of their earthly tunnel. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer Gracious God, give us ears to hear and minds to understand the message of immortality for the children of your kingdom so that we may look forward with patience and confidence to that time when we will join you in the peace of eternity. We especially pray for any we know who have recently died and are on that journey to you. Lord, in your mercy hear our prayer Faithful God, we thank you for the opportunity of being together in prayer. As we look forward to the week to come, we pray for an awareness of your love and support in all we do. Merciful Father accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen Adapted from the web site of The Anglican Chaplaincy of the Costa Blanca POST COMMUNION Lord God, whose Son is the true vine and the source of life, ever giving himself that the world may live: may we so receive within ourselves the power of his death and passion that, in his saving cup, we may share his glory and be made perfect in his love; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever.
