Harvest Thankgiving Eucharist

Harvest  weekend October 5th / 6th

Welcome

We believe in a generous God, a God who gave us everything. Giving and generosity are inextricably linked with the living out of our Christian faith, our time, talents and money.

As a church we encourage generosity, and there are certain times of the year which especially lend themselves to generous giving. Giving of our time and talents, sharing what we have, to help others. There are and will always be people in need through difficult circumstances that have affected their lives, and a very important source of help is our local Food Share, part of Windsor Christian Action. Harvest for me is a reminder for real community action, to give thanks for what we have and to share what we can. This weekend we are again holding a harvest market, back by popular demand! A fabulous community time, a coming together to share what we have from our own home grown produce, and preserves and tasty treats, to raise money for those in need.

Our wonderful hospitality champions at St Andrews put on a magnificent afternoon tea, my grateful thanks go to everyone. Gratitude is an important part of our lives, and sometimes accepting other people’s gratitude towards us can make us feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. How do you receive thanks from others?

Since St Ignatius’ time, people have used the Examen in lots of ways. It starts with gratitude and ends with thinking of how to serve others, perhaps you could reflect this way?

1. GIVE THANKS – what can you be grateful for today? It might be something very small – it might be that you had enough to eat today.

2. ASK FOR HELP with your attitude toward those who are in need – for whatever reason.

3. REFLECT on your day and think about the times you felt generous and loving towards others, and also on the times you felt resentful and unwilling to share what you have.

4. SAY SORRY for the times you may have been selfish and hoarded things only for yourself.

5. DECIDE how you will be more generous, sharing what you have, tomorrow.

Blessings
Revd Rosie

COLLECT

Eternal God,
you crown the year with your goodness
and you give us the fruits of the earth in their season:
grant that we may use them to your glory,
for the relief of those in need and for our own well-being;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS

Joel 2.21-27

Do not fear, O soil;
   be glad and rejoice,
   for the Lordhas done great things!
Do not fear, you animals of the field,
   for the pastures of the wilderness are green;
the tree bears its fruit,
   the fig tree and vine give their full yield.

O children of Zion, be glad
   and rejoice in the Lordyour God;
for he has given the early rain for your vindication,
   he has poured down for you abundant rain,
   the early and the later rain, as before.
The threshing-floors shall be full of grain,
   the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.

I will repay you for the years
   that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
   my great army, which I sent against you.

You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
   and praise the name of the Lord your God,
   who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.
You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
   and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other.
And my people shall never again
   be put to shame.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

1 Timothy 2.1-7

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For
there is one God;
   there is also one mediator between God and humankind,
Christ Jesus, himself human,
   who gave himself a ransom for all
– this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

Matthew 6.25-33

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.

‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?” For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS Father God we give you thanks that once again the earth has produced her increase. All over our beautiful world the harvest of grain is drying, ready for feed and bread and the harvest of roots crops and vegetables have been lifted or picked and stored.Holy God thank you that you give us our daily bread and fruit in its season but beyond this bread we look to the bread of heaven; beyond this fruit we look to the fruits of eternal life and so we pray for your church here in Clewer and those who minister to us Sunday by Sunday and help to fulfil our spiritual hunger.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Creator God we pray for harvests in parts of your world suffering drought, natural disaster, disease and war.  We pray for the struggling and the oppressed. Help those without power to negotiate or bargain within fairly traded markets and help all whose work goes unrewarded or whose produce is undervalued to realise their true value and worth and to be paid a fair wage for their labours.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Faithful God we pray for all those who provide for our daily needs.  For those working on the land, delivering foodstuffs and working in our local markets and shops.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Loving God we pray for those who are ill or in pain, longing to live full lives, for those who are sad or hurt, longing for comfort, for those in hospital awaiting treatment, for those convalescing, seeing an end to their suffering and for those whose only relief will come through death.  May we always offer gentle support to those in trouble sensitive encouragement to those in need, and strength and support to those in weakness.  We especially pray for SharonVivienne, Stef, John F, Joanna, Jane P, and Tom B.  Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Merciful Lord, your love reaches beyond the grave. At the end of our days on earth be with us and with those we love and with those whom we love and have gone before us.   We pray now for John Allbless, those who have recently died, and those whose anniversaries fall at this time.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Holy God as we leave this church today we ask that you your guiding hand may be upon our lives. Make us always grateful for the harvest and bounty of your creation and all those who provide for our daily needs and continue to inspire us again with your spirit that those who have, may readily share with those who have not.

Merciful Father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.   Amen

POST COMMUNION

Lord of the harvest,
with joy we have offered thanksgiving for your love in creation
and have shared in the bread and the wine of the kingdom:
by your grace plant within us a reverence for all that you give us
and make us generous and wise stewards
of the good things we enjoy;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
