Proclaiming Christ in Clewer
14 July 2024
7th Sunday after Trinity

Lando Norris at the British Grand Prix, Silverstone, 2024

THANK YOU

You may have noticed that I missed last Sunday’s service. Some of you may not care about motorsport, and some others may know that I am a keen fan, especially of Formula 1. So it was very fitting that the PCC, Grant, and James organised a pass for me (as a guest of his charity Driven by Us, which works for equality in motorsport) to be at all three days of the F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Last Sunday Revd Rosie asked you what you were thankful for. So belatedly I’ll list some things I am thankful for. Short term, thanks to you all for arranging for me to attend one of the best F1 races of recent years. And thanks to arguably the greatest F1 driver of all time, Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes, for winning the race. I’m also thankful for for the very generous collection for me which enabled me to purchase a photograph of Lewis on the winner’s podium, and a white Mercedes 44 cap. After covering the cost of electricity to get our car to and from Silverstone three times, I’m going to donate the remainder to James’ charity.

In the longer term I’m thankful to have been able to serve God and this Church as Churchwarden for 20 years. I took over from Jim Sharpe in 2003 when Revd Louise became Priest in Charge. When my parents were ill, I did take a year off, but when I literally heard God’s call to me, knew that I had to continue.

Speaking of my parents, I’m grateful to them for everything. Travel, education, the list is endless. Getting back to F1; in 1955, when I was one year old, my father took us to the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandfoort. It was won by Argentina’s Juan Manuel Fangio for Mercedes. Needless to say I don’t remember it, but we did go to other motorsport events over the years, and I thank my parents Roly and Sonia for kindling my interest.

Also, I’m thankful that having reached the age of seventy, I’m still in reasonably good health, give or take.

So again, thank you all for enabling this fantastic opportunity.

Stuart Cockman

P.S.One thing I learned last weekend is that it is very difficult to photogragh F1 cars as they speed past at 180 mph. As you’ll see from the picture above, probably the least blurry one I took!

INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS

The Seventh Sunday after Trinity. As we continue through these weeks following Trinity Sunday we gather once again to worship God, the living God, the God who is our creator, redeemer and guiding spirit.

The first reading is from Amos chapter 7 verses 7 to 15. Although seeing himself as a humble man, Amos was called to prophesy the consequences of flouting God’s will, making him unpopular with religious and political authorities.

The second reading from the letter to the Ephesians chapter 1 verses 3 to 14. The Gospel of salvation is clearly outlined as the Son of God who died for our redemption, forgiving us our trespasses and blessing us with the Holy Spirit.

The Gospel is St Mark chapter 6 verses 14 to 29. Herod Antipas agreed to the beheading of John the Baptist to avoid seeming weakness in front of his guests. Guilt set in when he started to fear that Jesus was John’s reincarnation.

COLLECT

Lord of all power and might,
the author and giver of all good things:
graft in our hearts the love of your name,
increase in us true religion,
nourish us with all goodness,
and of your great mercy keep us in the same;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS

Amos 7.7-15

This is what he showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb-line, with a plumb-line in his hand. And the Lordsaid to me, ‘Amos, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘A plumb-line.’ Then the Lord said,
‘See, I am setting a plumb-line
   in the midst of my people Israel;
   I will never again pass them by;
the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate,
   and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste,
   and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.’

Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, ‘Amos has conspired against you in the very centre of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. For thus Amos has said,
“Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
   and Israel must go into exile
   away from his land.”’

And Amaziah said to Amos, ‘O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.’

Then Amos answered Amaziah, ‘I am no prophet, nor a prophet’s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore trees, 15and the Lordtook me from following the flock, and the Lordsaid to me, “Go, prophesy to my people Israel.”

Ephesians 1.3-14

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.

Gospel Reading

Mark 6.14-29

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.

King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some were saying, ‘John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.’ But others said, ‘It is Elijah.’ And others said, ‘It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.’ But when Herod heard of it, he said, ‘John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.’

For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.’ And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, ‘Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.’ And he solemnly swore to her, ‘Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.’ She went out and said to her mother, ‘What should I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the baptizer.’ Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, ‘I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.’ The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS To God the Father who created the world, To God the Son who redeemed the world, To God the Holy Spirit who sustains the world; be all praise and glory now and forever.

Everlasting God we pray that all who come in to our church may be enabled to renew their relationship with you and may find in you rest, peace, strength, grace and most of all your abiding presence.  Help us as a congregation to be outward looking that through our fellowship we may share our faith and the Gospel of your Son Jesus Christ with those who we love and live amongst.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Creator God we pray for the people of our world who are less fortunate than we are, especially those who live in the third world, in countries where there is very little governmental stability and in countries where there is drought or famine.  Help us to remember those who are weary with the relentless struggle to keep alive; for those who can never look forward to a good meal and a comfortable bed, and those who barely have the necessities of life, much less so many material luxuries which we so often take for granted.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Father God may the needs of our families, friends and neighbours be made clear to us today, and may we find that in our giving to them we grow closer to you. We thank you for those whose work sustains the community in which we live; for all who create wealth from travel and tourism, for those who grow and provide our food, for those who, day and night, maintain public services; for the police, and emergency services, and for all whose work is in the local health service
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Healing God, we raise before you those who are sick. We ask that you will ease their pain and heal the damage done to them in body, mind or spirit. Be present with them through the support of friends and in the care of doctors and nurses, fill them with the warmth of your love now and always.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Merciful God we commend into your hands those whom we have loved and now have lost.  You gave them breath, and loved and cared for them throughout their lives.  Receive them now in your eternal kingdom and “May they rest peace and rise in glory”.
Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Faithful God we dedicate all these people and petitions to your loving care. Give us the strength and courage to walk alongside those in need, to fight for justice for the oppressed and to allow others to see you in us and in all that we do in the coming week.

Merciful Father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.   Amen

POST COMMUNION

Lord God, whose Son is the true vine and the source of life,
ever giving himself that the world may live:
may we so receive within ourselves the power of his death and passion
that, in his saving cup, we may share his glory and be made perfect in his love;
for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever.
Amen
