The Fifth Sunday of Easter

Thanksgiving for the Coronation
of King Charles III and Queen Camilla

Welcome

Our 10.30 Eucharist this Sunday will be full of meaning as we remember the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla. The coronation of an English sovereign is older than parliament and the Domesday book. It can be traced back to Anglo-Saxon times, to 973 when King Edgar, a grandson of Alfred the Great was anointed and crowned by St Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury. The basic structure of Dunstan’s service can be seen in the present-day coronation service. The coronation is but one part of the service and follows the more important anointing. We are reminded that Zadok the priest anointed Solomon king. (1 Kings 1, v 39)

As Charles will be anointed by Archbishop Justin, it is then and only then that the king is invested with the royal regalia and finally crowned.

In the sacrament of anointing, the king is consecrated and set apart under the blessing of God. As a servant king, he offers himself to God, and is consecrated by God to his lifelong service amongst us . What better example of this than that of the late queen. As the king and queen are anointed to their lifelong service to their peoples, so we should also, with God’s help, consecrate ourselves to the service of God, our king and country and one another. Perhaps we can find time over this coronation period to read through the following hymn:

Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee,
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only, for my King;
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,
Filled with messages from Thee.

Take my silver and my gold;
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose,
Every power as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it Thine;
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart; it is Thine own;
It shall be Thy royal throne,
It shall be Thy royal throne.

Take my love; my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure-store.
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee,
Ever, only, all for Thee.

Blessings for your week
Canon Brian

COLLECT

Almighty God, the fountain of all goodness,
bless our Sovereign Lord, King Charles,
and all who are in authority under him;
that they may order all things
in wisdom and equity, righteousness and peace,
to the honour of your name,
and the good of your Church and people;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen

READINGS (only the Gospel will be read on Sunday)

Isaiah 40.12-17,25-end

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand
   and marked off the heavens with a span,
enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure,
   and weighed the mountains in scales
   and the hills in a balance?
Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,
   or as his counsellor has instructed him?
Whom did he consult for his enlightenment,
   and who taught him the path of justice?
Who taught him knowledge,
   and showed him the way of understanding?
Even the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
   and are accounted as dust on the scales;
   see, he takes up the isles like fine dust.
Lebanon would not provide fuel enough,
   nor are its animals enough for a burnt-offering.
All the nations are as nothing before him;
   they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.

To whom then will you compare me,
   or who is my equal? says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high and see:
   Who created these?
He who brings out their host and numbers them,
   calling them all by name;
because he is great in strength,
   mighty in power,
   not one is missing.

Why do you say, O Jacob,
   and speak, O Israel,
‘My way is hidden from the Lord,
   and my right is disregarded by my God’?
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
   the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
   his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
   and strengthens the powerless.
Even youths will faint and be weary,
   and the young will fall exhausted;
but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
   they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
   they shall walk and not faint.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL READING

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Luke 22.24-30

A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. But he said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

‘You are those who have stood by me in my trials; and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS

Almighty God, you reign over all things in wisdom, power, and love. Hear our prayers which we offer in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For Charles our King, that you may pour upon him abundant gifts to help him fulfil the promises made at his coronation:

Lord, in your mercy; hear our prayer.

That he will have the grace, wisdom, and strength
to live a life of service to you and to his people:

Lord, in your mercy; hear our prayer.

For Camilla the Queen, William Prince of Wales,
the Princess of Wales, and all the Royal Family;
that they may love and support the King
as he bears the burden of his office:
Lord, in your mercy; hear our prayer.

For the building up of the Church
under its Supreme Governor,
for the building up of all Christian people,
and for mutual understanding and fellowship
between all people of faith:
Lord, in your mercy; hear our prayer.

For this United Kingdom,
for His Majesty’s other Realms and Territories,
for the whole Commonwealth of Nations,
for their governments and ministers,
and for all who are called to public service,
that they will seek justice, mercy, and peace:
Lord, in your mercy; hear our prayer.

For the peace of the world,
for the welfare of all people,
for those who care for others and for the environment,
and for all in need:
Lord, in your mercy; hear our prayer.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers, for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Grant, O Lord, we beseech you,
that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by your governance,
that your Church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

“I totally recommend visiting the sculpture at the parish church in town.
It is absolutely phenomenal!

“Made using computer keys and depicts the Last Supper by Peter Barnes. It is full of quotes and the disciples are named. The best bit is that all the arrow keys flow up towards the centre of Jesus, and, the centre is ‘home’ keys”
