| † St Andrews Proclaiming Christ in Clewer 23 October 2022 The last Sunday after Trinity Bible Sunday |
![]() WELCOME This Sunday is Bible Sunday and in our worship we will think about how our scriptures can help us in rebuilding our communities as places where God’s activity is seen and celebrated, and how we can take our part in building God’s Kingdom. The first reading is from Isaiah, chapter 45, 22-end. Speaking to the people in a land where they were taken into captivity, and other gods were believed to be powerful, Isaiah speaks the words of God that there are no other gods but God, and that this is a God who brings rescue. The second reading is from the letter to the Romans, chapter 15, 1-6. St Paul writes words of encouragement about not taking offence, but building one another up. He describes how the Hebrew scriptures describe God as both steadfast and encouraging. This is the model for our behaviour. And the gospel reading is from St Luke chapter 4, 16-24. Jesus reads part of the scroll of Isaiah and then preaches the good news of it for all who can hear it in his home town. Blessings for your week Canon Brian COLLECT Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen READINGS Isaiah 45.22-end Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.’ Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; all who were incensed against him shall come to him and be ashamed. In the Lordall the offspring of Israel shall triumph and glory. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 119.129-136 Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them. The opening of your word gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and draw in my breath, as I long for your commandments. Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is your way with those who love your name. Order my steps by your word, and let no wickedness have dominion over me. Redeem me from earthly oppressors so that I may keep your commandments. Show the light of your countenance upon your servant and teach me your statutes. My eyes run down with streams of water, because the wicked do not keep your law. Romans 15.1-6 We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Each of us must please our neighbour for the good purpose of building up the neighbour. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, ‘The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.’ For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. Luke 4.16-24 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, ‘Is not this Joseph’s son?’ He said to them, ‘Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, “Doctor, cure yourself!” And you will say, “Do here also in your home town the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.”’ And he said, ‘Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s home town. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. INTERCESSIONS Let us pray. The response to the bidding “Jesus Lord of Life” is “in your mercy hear us” Let us be still in heart and mind in God’s presence. Knowing that by ourselves we can do nothing we come to you bearing our weaknesses and frailties. We pray for grace to follow you faithfully and that in your strength we may reflect your love in action in the world. Show us the path you wish us to take casting aside ego, pride and ambition and to seek instead in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. We pray today for our Archbishops, Bishops, priests and deacons as they seek to support and sustain the church family, and the community more widely, in a time of the greatest uncertainty. Especially where Christians are persecuted. We pray in particular for Revd Rosie and Canon Brian. We pray for all those recently baptised here: Athena, Andrea, Rhys, Primrose and Thomas. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. Father we pray for peace in our war-torn world. We hold up to you the contradictions we feel trying to be peacemakers but feeling such anger and impotence as we see things unfold. We lay before you the terrible choices which must be made in times of war. We pray for the peoples of Ukraine; for the injured, the displaced and the hungry. We pray for the terrified children and their mothers who have had to leave behind their menfolk. We pray for the Russian people who are also paying a terrible price for war. We don’t know how this will end Lord. We pray for the leaders of the free nations; for right decisions and a true and lasting peace. We hold up to you all the nations which are ravaged by war, praying for peace and reconciliation. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. We pray for our country as prices rise and many are finding it hard to make ends meet. We pray for understanding on the part of Government to know just what it is like to have no reserves to fall back on and not to know where the next meal is coming from or how the bills can be paid. We give thanks for the work of food banks and others seeking to alleviate poverty. May those in need be treated with compassion and dignity. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. We pray for our young and in particular older children whose education has been so disrupted, and those suffering mental problems. And also for young children who are struggling after being isolated at home when very small. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. We pray for a world which struggles to live justly and in peace. We pray for those who have daily to search for food or walk a long way for clean water. We remember with sadness those whose lives are cut short by disease or violence and those who have fled their homes in fear. We pray for those who face persecution and torture with dignity. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. Despite our own pre-occupations we pray that you will give us the divine gift of generosity in our time, our love and our money, which are needed now more than ever. We are so often niggardly and grudging in the sharing of our blessings. Let us give with a cheerful and unstinting heart. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. We pray for all those who are doing their best to care for the ill in our medical and care services whilst themselves being anxious for their own health and that of those they love. Lord, in serving others in this selfless way they are doing what You have commanded in the clearest way possible Fortify and support them O Lord and let us be deeply grateful to them not just now but in the future. We pray for those who are ill; not just suffering from the Coronavirus but from all debilitating and concerning conditions. May they know the comfort of your presence and your voice calming their fears. We pray especially for Blake, Sam, Don, Karl, Hugh and Sarah, Joanna, Holly, Hugo, Frank and Barbara, Bill, Suzanne, Christopher, Jackie, Norman and Diane, Sylvia, and Mary. Refugees, Prisoners, the Homeless and those who mourn. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. We pray for all those recently departed this life, Frank Blagrove, Rebecca Linney and those whose anniversaries fall at this time. Jesus Lord of Life, in your mercy hear us. Father we give you thanks for all the goodness in the world. For every act of love and neigbourliness; of courage and selflessness and for all that builds up the common good. Give us grace to be part of all that is positive, dwelling on the good and seeing all that the Holy Spirit is doing in our world. Jesus, Lord of life, in your mercy hear us, accept our prayers, and be with us always. Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your true and living bread; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. One of our biggest expenses at Windsor Foodshare is buying in fruit and vegetables weekly . We try and make sure that everyone that visits gets a good selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. It is so important for peoples health, especially the children. With the cost of living going up farmers and suppliers costs are also going up which inturn passes on to us. Stopping buying fruit and veg is not something we even want to contemplate. We are one of very few foodbanks that are able to supply fruit and vegetables. This week we fed 126 people . With the cost of our fruit and veg from our supplier we spent £3.52 per person this week, so £14.08 per month per person. We are hoping to find donors who would like to sponsor a person or even a family each month. If you or a company you work for would like to get involved we would be very grateful for your help. We have several ways to donate money either by a bank transfer or just giving . Both of these options can be set up for recurring payments. Please put your reference as fruit and veg.
