† St Andrews
Proclaiming Christ in Clewer
18 September 2022
The 14th Sunday after Trinity

WELCOME

Over the past week we’ve had the opportunity to mourn the loss of our Queen, and also to come to the Parish church and pay our respects. This we have done by silent prayer, lighting a candle, and entering a message of appreciation and thanks in the book of condolence. Or taking part in last Sunday’s Eucharist or the service of prayer and reflection. Now we give thanks to God for the gift of Her Majesty’s life. We commend her to our heavenly Father’s care.

In the second book of Maccabes, chapter 12, vv 42-45 we read of the promise of the resurrection and the value of praying for those who have died.

St Paul’s letter to the Romans, chapter 8, vv 31-35 and 37-39. Paul spells out the source of our confident hope: the love of the living God revealed in Jesus Christ.

In St John’s gospel, chapter 6, vv 37-40 we read the words of Jesus which are full of promise. Whoever believes in Him shall have eternal life.

The great shining example of Queen Elizabeth was her deep faith, her belief in the living God and in Jesus. May Queen Elizabeth rest in peace and rise in glory.

COLLECT

Merciful Father and Lord of all life, we praise you that we are made
in your image and reflect your truth and light. We thank you for the life
of our late Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth, for the love she received from you and showed among us. Above all, we rejoice at your gracious promise to all your servants, living and departed, that we shall rise again at the coming of Christ. And we ask that in due time we may share with your servant Elizabeth that clearer vision promised to us in the same Christ our Lord; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.

All Amen

READINGS

Wisdom 3.1-9

But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
and no torment will ever touch them.
In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died,
and their departure was thought to be a disaster,
and their going from us to be their destruction;
but they are at peace.
For though in the sight of others they were punished,
their hope is full of immortality.
Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good,
because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;
like gold in the furnace he tried them,
and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them.
In the time of their visitation they will shine forth,
and will run like sparks through the stubble.
They will govern nations and rule over peoples,
and the Lord will reign over them for ever.
Those who trust in him will understand truth,
and the faithful will abide with him in love,
because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones,
and he watches over his elect.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills;
from where is my help to come?
My help comes from the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.
He will not suffer your foot to stumble;
he who watches over you will not sleep.
Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel
shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord himself watches over you;
the Lord is your shade at your right hand,
So that the sun shall not strike you by day,
neither the moon by night.
The Lord shall keep you from all evil;
it is he who shall keep your soul.
The Lord shall keep watch over your going out
      and your coming in,
from this time forth for evermore.

1 John 3.1-2

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Matthew 5.1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS

Eternal God, our heavenly Father, we bless your holy name for all that you have given us in and through the life of your servant Queen Elizabeth.

We give you thanks:
   for her love of family and her gift of friendship;
   for her devotion to this nation and the nations of the Commonwealth;
   for her grace, dignity and courtesy;
   and for her generosity and love of life.

We praise you for:
   the courage that she showed in testing times;
   the depth and of her Christian faith;
   and the witness she bore to it in word and deed.

Gracious God, we give thanks for the reign of your servant Elizabeth, our Queen,
and for the example of loving and faithful service which she has shown amongst us.
We thank you for the strength she has shown throughout her life, helping her to meet the demands her office made upon her.

We remember her family and all who mourn her passing.
Help us to follow her example of dedication and to commit our lives to you and to one another, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

We pray for our Sovereign Lord the King
and all the Royal Family,
   that you might reassure them of your continuing love
   and lift them from the depths of grief
   into the peace and light of your presence.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Father in Heaven, whose Church on earth is a sign of your heavenly peace, an image of the new and eternal Jerusalem: grant to us in the days of our pilgrimage that, fed with the living bread of heaven and united in the body of your Son, we may be the temple of your presence, the place of your glory on earth, and a sign of your peace in the world; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen
