Proclaiming Christ in Clewer
30June 2024
5th Sunday after Trinity

Midsummer by the Jubilee River

WELCOME

The 5th Sunday after Trinity

In our need we may come to the God who cares for each one of us. We will find faith, love, mercy and healing.

First reading from the Wisdom of Solomon
God created a good world in which we are called to righteousness and immortality.

The second reading from the second letter to the Corinthians
The church in Corinth Is called to make an organised collection  in order to help out the poor Christians in Judea.

The Gospel, Mark 5
Two different individuals overcome social constraints to reach out to Jesus. They find peace and healing. In these two stories in the gospel we see the mercy and love of Jesus shining through. We see Jesus’ peace and healing for the woman, and his supernatural love for Jairus and his family, followed by his simple care when he tells them to give the girl something to eat.

COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God,
by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed and sanctified:
hear our prayer which we offer for all your faithful people,
that in their vocation and ministry
they may serve you in holiness and truth
to the glory of your name;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen

READINGS

Wisdom of Solomon 1.13-15; 2.23-24

Because God did not make death,
and he does not delight in the death of the living.
For he created all things so that they might exist;
the generative forces of the world are wholesome,
and there is no destructive poison in them,
and the dominion of Hades is not on earth.
For righteousness is immortal.

For God created us for incorruption,
and made us in the image of his own eternity,
but through the devil’s envy death entered the world,
and those who belong to his company experience it.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

2 Corinthians 8.7-end

Now as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you – so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.

I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something – now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has – not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written,

‘The one who had much did not have too much,
and the one who had little did not have too little.’

But thanks be to God who put in the heart of Titus the same eagerness for you that I myself have. For he not only accepted our appeal, but since he is more eager than ever, he is going to you of his own accord. With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his proclaiming of the good news; and not only that, but he has also been appointed by the churches to travel with us while we are administering this generous undertaking for the glory of the Lord himself and to show our goodwill. We intend that no one should blame us about this generous gift that we are administering, for we intend to do what is right not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of others. And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found eager in many matters, but who is now more eager than ever because of his great confidence in you. As for Titus, he is my partner and co-worker in your service; as for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ. Therefore, openly before the churches, show them the proof of your love and of our reason for boasting about you.

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

Mark 5.21-end

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered round him; and he was by the lake. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, ‘My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.’ So he went with him.

And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years. She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, ‘If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.’ Immediately her haemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, ‘Who touched my clothes?’ And his disciples said to him, ‘You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, “Who touched me?”’ He looked all round to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.’

While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, ‘Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?’ But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, ‘Do not fear, only believe.’ He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, ‘Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.’ And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha cum’, which means, ‘Little girl, get up!’ And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

INTERCESSIONS

We lift our prayers to you, O Lord, for all people everywhere, those close to us and those far away.

We pray for those who minister and preach that they may never find themselves rejected out of hand as our Saviour Jesus Christ was in his home town synagogue.

We pray for the Worldwide Anglican Church and for the Church of England here in Clewer, asking for your help to grow in faith.  Help us also to respect the beliefs of others even if we do not share them, to celebrate what we have in common and accept our differences. Guide us in our ministries as we live each day determined to spread the Good News of your son Jesus Christ.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Creator God look with compassion on the whole human family; take away arrogance and hatred that infects the hearts of those who pursue war, violence and terrorism; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love and peace.

We pray today for peacemakers throughout the world, may they bring hope out of despair, peace out of conflict and prosperity out of poverty.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Father God we pray for our families and friends and especially for young people that they may grow up knowing love and hope, valuing life and respecting others.  We pray for those who are about to leave school and move on to the next stage in their lives, and for those for whom what happens next depends on exam performance.  We pray for those joining us here in Windsor on holiday over the coming weeks, praying that may travel safely and return refreshed.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Loving God we pray for healing in body, mind and spirit for all who are in need. We pray that in lives darkened by any kind of pain, distress or grief the light of Christ will bring comfort, hope and a sense of your all-encompassing love.

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Heavenly Father, we pray for those whose hearts have been saddened by the death of someone close and dear to them, for members of our families who have died and whose anniversary we recall. Help us to experience the comfort of the Holy Spirit within us, and the fellowship of the church family around us until we are reunited once more in your heavenly kingdom

Lord, in your Mercy: Hear our Prayer

Faithful God we pray for ourselves; as we go from our worship today to start the week ahead, we ask that in all we do, we may we walk more closely with you at our side safe in the knowledge that your Fatherly love and care knows no bounds.

Merciful Father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.   Amen

From the Chaplaincy of the Holy Spirit Costa Blanca

POST COMMUNION
Grant, O Lord, we beseech you,
that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by your governance,
that your Church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Refugees by Brian Bilston

Thanks to Mulle for the submission of this apparently very challenging piece of writing. Ensure that you read to the end, and then follow the final instructions.

They have no need of our help
So do not tell me
These haggard faces could belong to you or me
Should life have dealt a different hand
We need to see them for who they really are
Chancers and scroungers
Layabouts and loungers
With bombs up their sleeves
Cut-throats and thieves
They are not
Welcome here
We should make them
Go back to where they came from
They cannot
Share our food
Share Our homes
Share our countries
Instead let us Build a wall to keep them out
It is not okay to say
These are people just like us
A place should only belong to those who are born there
Do not be so stupid to think that
The world can be looked at another way

CAN YOU HELP?

We are running very low in stock on several items. One of these is cereals – wheat biscuits / Weetabix, corn flakes, bran flakes, malted wheat / Shreddies, Hoops / Cheerios etc. They do not have to be branded items. You get so much more for your money buying non-branded items.

We have a permanent donation box at Tesco Superstore and also at Waitrose & Partners. So if you are shopping it is easy to pop a carton or two in.

Or why not try our Wishlist on Common Good and Amazon.
